Do you think I should get normal (old style solus type) for the front hall seeing as I may need to light the place up fully and quickly if somebody calls to the front door.

Is this what's usually done or are the new "energy saving" bulbs quicker now?

Generally what watt bulb is used for a standard living room or kitchen etc.?

    Thanks.

Get LED. It's instant like standard bulbs.

    Brilliant - thanks for that.

What wattage would be normal to have in a average sized living room and bedroom, kitchen?

    Thanks very much. :)

Newer CFLs and LEDs are the only way to go, plenty of good brands out there like Megaman etc that give good light output and colour. They will use less electricity and with far less unwanted heat your light fittings and shades fare far better in the long run.
