    Wow, that is amazing.

I'm kind of in awe of (talented) sculptors.

Still like the Charleville cow too though. :P

There's real talent that I admire and then there's flaking the daylights out of a piece of galvanise with a sledge hammer to make it look (roughly) like a cow.
The Charleville cow is an advertising gimmick, and an ill made and ugly one at that.

Judging by his description of the scrap metal at the side of the N7, I'm guessing that they just regurgitated the pretentious sh*te that the artist fed them.

And one well known Boardsie :)

    Really?? can ye say who?

    That would be me.

This crazy yoke in Ballindine, Co. Mayo. It's supposed to be an accordion being played.

I am a bit surprised at the negativity on here, what do people want ? just more Victorian statues of obscure men.

It seems to me some of the public art around is just simply brilliant and has a nice mix of traditional motifs and more imaginative stuff . I love coming on a new piece ,or new to me, on my drives around the country.

Infinitely preferable to picks of scrap iron tossed at the side of the road indiscriminately or towering multicoloured installations destroying scenery.

I've always liked the statue of Icarus on the Rocky Road roundabout in Ennis.

This one is my favourite in the country. Bloody gorgeous, so it is. The Gaelic Chieftain by Maurice Harron :

I like that. I pretty much walk by it everyday and I'm still not bothered by it.

People think art has to be something identifiable for it to be "good", which completely misses the point of art.

Enlighten me, what is the point of art?
I enjoy art galleries hugely, but I draw the line at a 20 square foot piece of cardboard with pieces of tape stuck to the top left corner. With a 1000 word explanation/reason/excuse beside it. art to me tell me a story, guides me through a series of feelings/emotions it shouldnt annoy or confuse intentionaly. Art for Art sake, I dont believe is art.

Cattle seem to be quite popular in Ireland. I like these in a place called markethill in Armagh.

And also the bull on the M1 in Louth, it's amazing how it's made, although blink and you've missed it.

The salmon of knowledge in Belfast is excellent too.

Taxpayer funded public art is one of my pet hates and one of the worst examples - which I see every day - is the so called "Singing Bird" in Enniscorthy. http://countywexford.blogspot.ie/2009_07_01_archive.html Better known as the "Beak with the Leak", even the late artist Conor Fallon was dissatisfied with the way that his work ended up displayed. Despite endless talk by the town council about removing the sculpture it remains in situ and with the council itself about to be removed, there it will stay. :(

Love the lines and energy in that one.

The only time that it can be fully appreciated is when local kids add washing powder but these days that's a rarity as the water is usually turned off.

AFAIK the giant ball with road markings outside Naas cost somewhere in the region of €120,000. The artist got the price of a house and is now living as far away from it as possible and laughing at us.
AFAIK it was a collaborative effort so there were two artists responsible for the work, it's called perpetual motion btw. You can see some of her other stuff here http://www.racheljoynt.com/public-art/
I'm not a huge fan of it myself, but I knew the artists father and he was a sculptor himself, I spent some time up at his studios when I was younger and he handed me a chisel and a hammer and told me to blast away with it :) don't think I would have made a great sculptor but he was a really nice fella. (it was a trip down memory lane reading this thread)

English public art! Knocking it down too.

Few of these deer dotted around Moynalty, Co.Meath. Pretty cool. A few hanging baskets on a bridge and some wicker deer and the tidy towns is in the bag!

The Balindine accordian yoke is truly awful - the two random circles at the M4 toll equally so. ( reminds me of horse racing tote signs) but in general I like public art and I have to say The Chieftain on the curlews is a great piece, perfectly situated, site specific (arty term ahem) and makes sense. Also like Daedalus on the back of Killiney hill.

    That's a lovely piece.

I know the Angel of the North has been mentioned, and this one is in Liverpool (must visit it one day) but Anthony Gormley is one hell of a sculptor. Love this: Another Place

I don't have more than 50 posts so can't link things.

A lot of people have mentioned The Dancers in Strabane and the king statue in Derry - they are done by the artist Maurice Harron, who has done a lot of lovely work around Ireland, such as Dog leap in Roe Valley and Hands across the divide.

I dislike the statue on a pole in Sainsbury's car park, the boat and I hate the men who look stuck together in Derry walls beside the theatre.

Look up "Mute Medow", pile of ****e.

That bear is really sinister and creepy.

Same as the bears at the o2, only armed with a bucket and spade. Still absolutely hideous.

    http://www.panoramio.com/photo/70226735

Also this hideous thing outside UL http://www2.ul.ie/pp/graphics/mainentrance_41.jpg.

In all my years there I never understood its purpose or what the point of it was :S

Edit: Just looked it up and it's mean to reflect "the light and air from the seasons and the passing of time". I'm sorry but how exactly does it do that??
