Over two weeks ago and only hearing this for the first time tonight.

A group of Islamist rebels in the dead of night, with trucks mounted an assault on a girls boarding school managing to abduct over 200 young girls, to marry and sell for marriage.

Dufuq is wrong with these radical Muslims?

Those poor girls and their families :(

I just can't even imagine such a thing.

No. That's just beyond awful. Human trafficking is just something I can't fathom. Especially of children :(

I normally don't listen to the news but breaking stories appear on the internet all the time. I haven't seen anything about it until today. This happened over two weeks ago.

This lot seem extremely nutty...which when you consider what the rest of the jihadis are like is bad news indeed.

It's really quite easy to understand. It's profitable and it spreads fear.

It gives a bit of context as to why people decide to seek asylum in Ireland.

So much death, suffering and human-rights abuse taking place in Sub-Saharan Africa at the moment. All very depressing. It rarely registers in the news here though. Focus always seems to be on much more complex flashpoints in the Middle East.

I find it completely disgusting that people are making jokes about this.

It's sad that stuff can happen like this. These girls will more than likely be subjected to all kinds of suffering, will never see their families again and possibly even be killed.

There is a petition on the White House petition page. I'm not sure if you have to be an american to sign it. Change.org has one as well

It was reported earlier today that the number of school girls missing has gone up to 276, meaning 329 were abducted but 53 escaped.

Two things very FUBAR about this story. The mass abduction,
And the fact that it's considered acceptable to marry young children in this particular religious community.

Every year countless innocent young girls are given to older men to marry. This every day depravity is much more horrific than this single act of large scale depravity

    Ban billionaires

Strange thing to say. There was zero mention of a Facebook page.

This was nearly 3 weeks ago... the Nigerian government has only just asked for photos of the girls

Boko Haram are particularly nasty, they've killed hundreds already this year.. they focus on churches and schools, massacring and burning students in their sleep, also recently motorists been hacked to death, survivors had their eyes gouged out

The US and Europe and other African nations are trying to help

What has it got to do with the White House? I thought this happened in Nigeria.

    No

This is trade. The young women are simply things that they can sell for money. They are a commodity.

Sexual slavery and bride businesses are all over the world. Some allow a certain compliance on behalf of the women although with perhaps economic or extreme social pressure. Many don't.

They want what they can get. It is a barren economy with women having little social status. There is a high degree of corruption so they do not fear the law and there is a lot of lawlessness.

And they are practiced at extreme violence and maldeeds . They are used to doing it so they can.

Young brides are allowed by some in Islam ....in fact
No age limits have been fixed by Islam for marriage according to Reuben Levy, and "quite young children may be legally married". The girl may not live with the husband however until she is fit for marital sexual relations. The Hanafi madhhab of Islamic fiqh maintains that a wife must not be taken to her husband's house until she reaches the condition of fitness for sexual relations. Levy adds:

"In case of a dispute on the matter between the husband and the bride's wali (her nearest male kinsman and her guardian), the judge (qadi) is to be informed and he is to appoint two matrons to examine the girl and report on her physical preparedness for marriage. If they decide she is too young, she must return to her father's house until she is judged fit. Betrothal may take place at any age. Actual marriage is later, but the age for it varies in different lands."
—Reuben Levy, The Social Structure of Islam

In Islamic legal terminology, Baligh refers to a person who has reached maturity, puberty or adulthood and has full responsibility under Islamic law. Legal theorists assign different ages and criteria for reaching this state for both males and females. In marriage baligh is related to the Arabic legal expression, hatta tutiqa'l-rijal, which means that the wedding may not take place until the girl is physically fit to engage in sexual intercourse. Some Hanafi scholars hold the opinion that sexual intercourse may take place before puberty, as long as it's not injurious to one's health. In comparison, baligh or balaghat concerns the reaching of sexual maturity which becomes manifest by the menses. The age related to these two concepts can, but need not necessarily, coincide. Only after a separate condition called rushd, or intellectual maturity to handle one's own property, is reached can a girl receive her bridewealth.

Now for there also balance used to be (and probably still are in some quarters child brides in Christianity. And most Muslims would not agree with child brides.
