Noticed in that piece they've extended the channel until 6.55pm. Why can't they extend RTE1+1 past the usual 1-2am closedown time right up to when RTEjr starts since they share the same bandwidth?

Because the ministerial permission was only for it to be a approx 6 hours service a day

It costs RTE nearly €2m a year in carriage costs to provide us with the excuse for a news channel and RTE jr and RTE 1+1, all with no additional revenue from advertisers. And this minister (Rabbitte) is the one who has stood by while RTE cuts, cuts, cuts, and TV3 has its debts cut, cut, cut.

Mind you, RTE do not appear to be that interested in Saorview, nor have they ever been.

Do you think he will spend a year deciding on an rte one +1 24hours a day?

He has already had 3 years to contemplate it. What's another year?

24 years since Johnny Logan won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time.

RTE ONE +1 should be change to rte plus and show the programs RTE shows late at night at better times, it can still be part time like like RTE ONE +1 is and have ad to make money from the channel.

No probs Ed, if RTÉ put the request in for you today the minister will tell you in a years time that he will make a decision shortly. Expect him to say No in 2016, though it will be a new minister.

Also expect TV3 to whinge and object to the idea again.

I do wonder is he just delaying until UTVi is on air. It'd dilute the usual whinging from TV3 if UTV just say whatever changes are fine/ no concern of theirs - which appears to be their position on lots of the things that TV3 love to moan about as things stand.

I suspect he is waiting for his last day in office to skewer his successor, like his predecessor did to him.

At this stage even with Labour doing so badly in the poll I can't see the government falling. So we'll get an answer in Feb 2016?

Sunday Times today says Independent Broadcasters want rtes advertising per hour reduced by 25% and also to limit the amount of content for new digital channels. Looks like they will soon need the permission of more than just the Minister to do anything other than provide a public service remit. The Consultants report will give a range of scenarios for review.

Do you mean it will require the approval of Rupert Murdoch as well as TV3 and the Minister?

Depends on how you define "public service" - is it Lord Reith's "inform, educate, and entertain" mission, or do you mean it in a narrower sense (which the likes of TV3 would prefer) i.e. to mean just news, current affairs, "worthy" documentaries, and children's programming. For example, lets take RTÉ's GAA broadcasts. Is that public service broadcasting or commercial? It fits within the larger BBC-type definition, but you will not see the AFL or any other top flight sport on ABC, in fact their sports portfolio is limited to minor leagues. You won't see any sport on PBS, well not nationally at any rate. In Canada the CBC has lost the rights to ice hockey in its own right (it will be sublicencing some games but won't be getting any revenue for doing so). So where does sport fit in. The logical outcome of RTÉ (and TG4, remember they are a PSB too) exiting the sports markets is that quite a lot of the rights it now holds would end up on Sky and Setanta.

Currently we have an RTÉ that looks like the BBC, if with a much smaller budget and resources. Would we prefer an RTÉ that looks like ABC (Australia) or PBS? That I think is the question here.

What consultants report? Should I ask

The current head of PBS wrote a few articles on the role of PBS in the states. She seemed to think it was unthinkable that PBS would provide live sports but wondered why it was allowed to produce quality sporting documentries, that PBS was unable to enter the entertainment market yet had successfully provided quality Children's programming, like Sesame Street.

I have a feel that the Minister won't announce the move until that consultation is finished.

Though it won't be him making that announcement.

My understanding is their plan was to show programs like Gok wan and masterchef on RTE 2 from 9am-2pm so the relay of rtejr is fine imo.

But what's the point of a separate children's channel then?

The minister could have turned around and said you can move rtejr from rte two but you can only replace it with trte, the previous minister did that with rte's proposals for rte jr, news now and one +1 certain aspects were allowed and others where not eg RTE PLUS and ads on News Now

Instead he made no decision he didn't even have the balls to say NO

None. they should close it down to save some money

Even that is a decision. 15 months for no decision.

Or they could agree to the changes and earn some money to help pay for it. Either way its a decision.

I wonder would RTE get away with scaling back RTEjr on RTE two without asking premission ? For example if did something like this 7-9am trte 9am-1.30pm rtejr 1.30-2.30 Home & away and neighbours moved over from rte one. 2.30 trte.
