Considering the government have made a profit on the money they used to bail out BOI I reckon he's worth it. If only every bank that got bailed out could do the same.

Some really are unbelievable begrudgers, I'd say they would set a salary cap at 30k regardless of profession as any body on anything overs that is "overpaid" according to some.

800k is a very modest salary for a bank CEO. There would be 1000 of people working in UK banks earning a lot more than that who would be nowhere near CEO and CEO's would be on figures like 10 million+.

People have no concept of the fact these jobs in charges of 1000's of people and billions of euro need extremely good people and for that you have to pay well.

I am usually the first to join an Irish bank kicking - but this is not Anglo Irish or the Irish Nationwide or even the AIB - the Bank of Ireland is possibly the best performing bank , and as others have said has turned around its losses to an extent, and this to the benefit to the Irish state and its citizens - so I am not too irked !

And throughout the history of time.

That's not true at all. It's only in the past few decades that managers of businesses have been paid well.

Thats free market capitalism for you. If Ireland capped bank CEO pay at 50k all the best people would go elsewhere.

If you're not happy with yer man's salary don't bank there.

Simply PM me with your bank details and I'll transfer your account to a newly established bank specially created to serve the financial needs of the disgruntled.

    Lapinbank.

Some jealous kents in this thread. He is the CEO of one of Ireland's largest banks, what do you expect him to be making?

Back in the day people would use that as motivation, now days lazy feckers want the ceos salaries to be capped lol

It's a private company that's performed well? Some people really don't have the ability to think about things themselves and just decide to hop on the populist bandwagon. Over 99% of shareholders supported this pay level.

How exactly Shane? Can you please engage your brain and tell us how this is evidence of the country going beyond a joke?

Isn't BOI partly owned by the taxpayer?

Also I thought there was a cap of 500 k on the salaries of these guys.

    Doesn't apply retrospectively.

Some people look at successful people and say

"That bastard. I can't wait until he is back down to my level"

Others look at successful people and say

"Look at what he has achieved. I hope to be as successful as him some day"

Or some people might say "look at what he's acheived - I hope he has good health, and love in his life or all that money is worth nothing"

Considering you consider money not relevant to these 2 factors, what does it have to do with his salary?

Yeah exactly what I was saying. Instead of people using it as motivation to one day be in that position all they do is complain.

Because the thread is about his salary ? There are numerous responses to his situation - you presented only 2 - I gave my response. If he's happy I'm happy for him. If he's not happy then I feel sorry for him.

Nonsense, managers would always have been paid considerably more that those below them. Why would they take on the responsibility otherwise.

I can't understand why people have such a problem with successful people being paid very well.

I dont know how any right-thinking person could agree with such a salary. Considering how badly the banks screwed this country and all the hard working taxpayers who were given 100% mortgages on shaky foundations only to be harassed and bullied by the same banks in 2009 onwards, not to mention the fact that the banks effectively lied to the government as to how bad the situation was (pluck the figure from my a$se, anyone, remember that?), there should have been a complete overhaul of the banks from top down and a criminal investigation leading to jailings.

But this is Ireland and we are good little boys and girls who will never rock the boat and will continue to bank in the same place where we complain about the CEOs salary. And they know this damn well- even the recent shareholders meeting the complaints were weak at best and Richie Bouchier just sat there and stared at them, didnt even have the balls to make a comment on his hugely unjustified salary. Just sat there with a brass neck and perplexed expression. We wont rock the boat though, we will bend over and pay household charges, water meters and hold no protest on bankers pay and bonuses. Because its Ireland.

P.S where the hell is Richie Bouchier FROM? He has the weirdest accent I have heard in a long time, cant put a country to it at all....

Did Richie Boucher do any of this? Did he do the opposite of this? There's your answer.

He also pays property tax and will pay water charges and his tax bill will subsidise you and hundreds of more people.

Begrudgery and jealousy of successful is rife in these parts.

Also we pay people in his position less than most places around the world rather than more, you would swear we were the only country who pays people properly for the position they are in.

Do you "feel sorry for" all people that aren't happy? Seems pretty condescending.

I have been to many countries over the past few years, and you will never find as much begrudgery and jealousy of successful people than back home here in Ireland.

Pretty sad tbh. Instead of whining about the salary of others, why don't you go out and try and improve your own.

Exactly, don't the so called "wealthy" make up most of the tax take in this country between tax on their income and tge VAT they pay ob expensive goods? I remember reading that somewhere once.

Plus they use very few public services as well.

Besides becoming a head of a bank which is subsidised by tax payers ( or guaranteed by tax payers, or both) what can people expect to do?

This guy is a public servant. Were he a teacher on 40k right wingers would go crazy.

Also the owners of the banks - the shareholders and taxpayers - are also pissed.

What held you back from becoming a CEO?
