    What about Roots?

I don't know if you could look at Roots as being a "positive" black sitcom given its subject matter.
A fair analysis of the subject matter but not positive and def not a sitcom :(

Did anyone see when Will, his idiot son and "Carlton" showed up and sang the Fresh Prince theme song at the Graham Norton show?
Possibly the greatest show of all time

No Uncle Phil wasn't his biological father, but his real father figure. His biological father walks out on him again in that video

The French Prince, je me souviens bien. Great show.

    Ah, Philadelphia de l'Ouest,
    J'y ai été elevé,
    Au Cour de récréation,
La plupart de mes jours je passais.

I would say it was The Cosbys that was the first positive "black" sitcom.
Different Strokes....The white folks were wealthy and took in the kids.
The Cosbys...Cliff was a Dr and Claire was a lawyer and came at it from a more positive note :)

Did you guys ever have "The Jeffersons" over here?

Yes exactly. It was the first depiction of a black upper middle class family

Will Smith ... played a black young man

And all this time I thought he really was a young black man. :(

    What about Roots?

That was a tv mini series about slavery

Lol. You consider that positive? He was kind of racist.

Well the black people in it were the good guys by default, so I guess you could call that positive.

Yes it was a rare moment of true TV gold.

You are a khaki coloured bombardier, it's Hiroshima that you're nearing.

Yes it was a rare moment of true TV gold.

Thought the one with Gary Barlow was better! Wills son annoys me :/

It worries me that so many have the basic details / plot of this wonderful show so wrong.

I must really be getting old.

" I thought the big black one was his father"

    Baby Jesus wept reading that

If you didn't do the prince and jazzy handshake, you had an awful childhood.

I thought the Cosby Show was a better and more wholesome example of American family life, with a more dramatically comprehensive approach to the nuances of the characters.

There's also a very intuitive episode where Carlson and will join forces to prevent their youngest sister (Ashley) from having sex. But in the end she decides of her own free will not to lose her virginity, and her boyfriend respects her decision greatly

Tragically Uncle Bill died recently. I used to love how he'd get all angry trying to control his wild nephew who was struggling to adapt to the significantly stricter setting than than what he was previously used to.

    Uncle Phil!

Could have been. Probably 25 years since I've seen it. I was young innocent, and liked the theme song. ☺

    Well, there's that.

    Mainly Lisa Bonet though.

True. And there was one great scene where Will realised Uncle Bill was his real father

    Very emotional "acting"

Jaysus that was brilliant acting, I'd forgotten he was that good

I watched this every day after school without fail, good times:)

My favourite character was Will's best friend Jazz. He would alway's say the wrong thing to someone and end up getting thrown out the front door (literally!)

I was reading that it was mostly improv, fantastic acting

Loved the show but when I watch it now I think it's a bit racist. Every white person is a total douchebag.

Tatyana Ali who played Ashley grew up to be a fine bit of stuff.

The French Prince, West Baltimore, Uncle Bill, Uncle Bill is Will's real dad in the show...what the fack was going on in this thread!?

It's like I'm reading about the show in the twilight zone.

I thought Uncle Phil was always overbearing, most likely overcompensating for the the social dichotomy that was tickling his big brain. He was also carrying a crush for Jeffrey, albeit an unrequited one.
