I fully support those who are taking a stand against the water meter installations, water is a basic human right Im against water charging it will be a huge burden on a lot of people already struggling, the talk of free allowances is just to try get around people to accept water charges, but in time if our water ends up being privatised there will be no free water allowances then, I know some might say its €250 per year, good article in the sunday business post last week on water charges the only reason it will be €250 next year is because of the €500 million grant/subsidy Irish water will be receiving off the government, the government has said long ago they plan to make Irish water a self financing company which means the €500 million grant/subsidy won,t always be in place which according to the article in SBP would mean water charges of up to €600 or €700 per year.

You can get free electricity allowance, TV licence, Cant see any difference in allowing some kind of water allowance for less well off. Just means people that cant afford it need to apply for it. rather than giving everyone a huge static allowance even the very rich for example. People that can afford to pay it should. People that cant should get an allowance simple.

Couldn't give a f*ck about the radiation aspect and it's a shame that the protesters feel this is the only way they can be regarded as legitimate. The cost of living argument is more than enough to stand on its own and for that reason I support any direct action to obstruct the water charges by any means, but I see no reason not to be honest about the real reasons for doing so.

When the infrastructure is in place to provide us with Clean water without the current massive loss of water in the system I will welcome the Water charges.

Until then no chance. Property tax and other such taxes should already be covering the upgrading of the system to fix the leaks.

The bad one! Shur it's all bad!

There was a woman on the radio the other day saying that the smart meters give out 10,000 times more power than mobile phones, because they are connected to the "smart-grid" (no they're not). Apparently her friend got heart-arrhythmia from smart meters and another friend's child was autistic as a result.

It's ignorance of basic science. And logic. And common sense.

Ahahaha! They give off radiation because they're connected to a grid that hasn't even been implemented yet?
    That's some fancy radiation!
Just wait until the gas and electricity smart meter programme gets going at the end of 2016. They'll have a field day with their pseudo-science and Declan Waugh will be to the forefront as usual.

None of those things are a basic human necessity the way water is. People should be able to drink, wash themselves and flush the toilet as needs be without worrying about how much it's going to cost them to do so.

Would be interesting to find out if they even give off anyway near general background radiation.... Some people probably have old clocks/watches/compasses that give off more in their house.

You pay vat/tax on food. It somewhat irks me when people go on like we live in some really bad part of Africa with no money or access to treated water. Poor here should get large allowance paid for. People that can afford it should pay.

Actually I might ask about the water meters the next chance I get.
The fact that they're buried in concrete out on the road while some hysterical idiot complains about them with a mobile phone clamped to their ear while trawling the net using wifi looking for conspiracy theories is highly amusing though.

And I've always thought that this was bullsh!t. Food is outrageously more expensive in Ireland than it is in most of Europe.

People should be able to use as much water as they need to survive, without having to worry about whether it'll bankrupt them. You shouldn't have to choose whether or not to have a shower or a glass of water based on whether it'll mean you'll have to buy less food next week.

Your missing my point. The poor should be subsidised, And people that can afford to pay should pay. If someone for example is running up a massive bill maybe they need to look into not having 20 min showers flushing the toilet every time they pee. We all need to watch what we use if your already doing this I reckon you will not notice much. I agree with fixing all the leaky pipes and so on, but no-one is being charged for that you are only charged for what you use in principal.

Here you go UN Declaration of human rights

    http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/#atop

I cant seem to find water mentioned there but article 25 metions

Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing ...

Should these be provided free of charge also, to everybody?

Why would you not pay for a service that you are using, and some for some people abusing? Its the same as ESB, GAS etc. People with their own wells and private group water schemes have been doing it for years.

What is the grave danger associated with privatisation? There are already water plants operated privately providing water supply to public schemes in the country - have been for a number years, and yet charges are only coming in now.

Indeed this is true, there is a government subvention for Irish water, and it will be reduced over time. It is unlikely to be completely cut though, and the whole point is there should be efficiency savings (though with legacy staff being brought over i doubt it will meet targets).

To add, customer side leakage has been estimated up to 50% of total leakage on some water supply schemes, which the water meters will help to identify, which should reduced running costs significantly along with the water mains rehabilitation and water conservation programs ongoing around the country.

i see here that we are truly divided on the water meters yes some of ye joke about them because it is a joke how in time we dont know how much and to who or where we will pay for our water to the boardies that have made fun of this have ye children how much will our children have to pay for water in the future if and i say if there is any radiation off of these smart meters when will we learn of it ,when will we be told. there is talk of banning e cigs because there are not safe how do we know that these smart meters are safe i simply asked for a straight up opinion from anybody that could anwer some concerns i had, what have if, any rights, do people have to stop the installation of the water meters

Your missing my point. The poor should be subsidised, And people that can afford to pay should pay.

It shouldn't be a rich/poor thing. Water should be subsidised full stop.
If someone for example is running up a massive bill maybe they need to look into not having 20 min showers flushing the toilet every time they pee.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about - people should be able to flush the toilet whenever they use it FFS.
We all need to watch what we use if your already doing this I reckon you will not notice much.

Given that they can increase prices to fit conservation, it's pretty obvious that this is BS. They will fleece us by any means they can to pay their outrageously overpaid consultants and directors.
I agree with fixing all the leaky pipes and so on, but no-one is being charged for that you are only charged for what you use in principal.

No one is being charged for that? If water costs X to produce, and we lose y gallons of it, who's paying for those gallons if the consumer won't be? Of course they'll make us pay for it.

Are they objecting to paying for water, or are they objecting about the possibility of radiation in meters on the roadside? Either way, they've made fools of themselves by bringing up the radiation aspect at this stage. They've also lost credibility by allowing outsiders tell them what to do.
