A friend of mine is looking to buy 08 Audi 2.0 diesel.
Could someone tell me which engine should he go for?
I've heard of oil pump failure and other problems in blb engines.

Is he looking at the 2005 to 2008 B7 or 2008 to present B8 model? Both had different engines fitted.

The B8 got all new common rail engines which did not suffer from oil pump issues. 2.0 TDi was available in 120bhp, 143bhp and 170bhp. A low emissions 138bhp version was also later introduced and badged 2.0 TDie. There was also a less common 2.7 TDi which was later replaced with the more powerful and cleaner 3.0 TDi.

Pretty reliable units but common problems include erg valves needing to be replaced. DMF failure is also common especially on high mileage examples. Timing belt on the 2.0 litre needs to be changed every 100k miles (180k km) or 5 years.

They are all CR engines in the B8.
