Hey thanks for the replies, i rang that guy with the bmw i posted the link of, i asked a few questions, one being how long has he owned it, he said a few years now. I was going to look at it tomorrow but now i've read what Colm_mcm said, that it changed owner the last few months, think that knocks it on the head.

I'm not sure what i want to buy, i was looking at bmw, 320i, 320d, 316 ect..
Also looking at mazda 6 like these,

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mazda-6-diesel-ts/6807866

What else should i be looking at, i don't mind if its diesel/petrol, anything up to 2.0L, around 02-04 year, in or around 2k?

I had a 2.2 320... A roaring alcohlic. The Mazdas are a Mondeo in drag but they're a good car in petrol form, not in diesel.

S60s are a fine car just becareul with any tired petrol turbo.

Looking for advice on a new diesel saloon. Wont have much to spend, about 3 grand.

Was thinking of a Passat, lovely bus and I'd pick up a decent '04 130bhp for that money if I looked around.

Was also thinking of a 320d, lovely car but maybe too much to maintain.

Skoda Superb wouldn't be a bad option but I can't find many 130bhp and its a big car for a 100bhp engine to be pulling around. I like Mondeos but the women doesn't, she'd rather the Mazda6 but I was told they give trouble.

Has anyone had any experience with these? Basically just want it to be fairly reliable, comfortable and have a bit of poke if I need it.

I'd probably go with a Passat 130 out of that list, if you got a good 320d it would be a much nicer car but they're few and far between and you'll pay for one.

If you got a comfortline or highline passat (Watch for clocking!!!) you shoud be ok.

Mileage, mileage missing, not being maintained properly, ruined by muppets.

Cheers. I do really like the Passats. Signs of clocking are a worn steering wheel, pedals etc that don't fit with the mileage?

Yeah for the price range I'm looking at they're probably all drove to bits.

Has anyone heard anything about the Mazda6 2ltr diesels? Friend has a '08 one and its a lovely car. Drives well, nice interior, nice power.

It varies. Depends on year, engine size and current price of car etc.

Theres a site where you can check the VRT cost of the car you're thinking of getting. Once you have the reg it makes it easier, but you can do it without it once you have enough details about the car.

A Yaris is vastly superior to a Corsa and there is a lot better middle ground between them too.

That's part of the thing with them, you'll rarely get a "bargain" - which pays back when you come to sell it.
I'd be looking at mainland uk either way as every tom dick and Harry is sniffing out the 1.0 yaris's in the 6 counties.

    What's your total budget?

max €1900....what are the costs like from getting a car over here from england?

Biggest cost is the ferry obviously, but you need to factor in travel within the uk too, trains are expensive,
For a €1900 car I'd nearly stay here though.

Vrt on a 00 to 03 1.0 would be €380, I'd budget €400 for travel, so that leaves €1,200 or £1000 for the car.
