I've only been to the city, Kinsale and Sherkin. All nice but for me the Cork accent was a problem (I have the same problem in Dublin too).
Ha you haven't seen much of the county at all so - The Cork city accent is completely different to that of the county Cork accent so you'll have to figure out if you like the different strains of the accent from around the county ;)

Cork is alright but it's irritating when people constantly harp on about it. And most of those people who do harp on about it aren't from Cork, but just like to moan about Cork people who supposedly harp on about being from Cork.

I prefer Dublin and Galway though.

    Another thread about Cork. Marvellous.

I find it refreshing that sometimes we get threads on other cities than Dublin.

Love Cork City, second best city in Ireland behind Dublin for me. Per capita, is a better place to eat out than Dublin though.

Cork, it's a grand place. Haven't seen too much of the county, would like to in future. Should probably pay a visit to Cork itself during the summer, haven't got the time at the moment.

It's been too long since I've been in Cork. I've friends from Cork, and I slag off the accent just to hear them go up a full defensive octave, I love that alternating lilt. :)

Dublin is my number one, Cork a close second, and I've no idea why Galway is so popular, it's nice enough but not nearly as special as the denizens would have you believe.

Galway is the most over-rated city on Planet Earth. Seriously why does everyone jizz their pants over the place?

People from cork jizz all over their pants for their own city too.

nice enough county but the people are d1cks. Shame because it probably gives tourists the wrong impression of what Ireland is actually like

I've always found Cork people very friendly. We've stayed in the city centre and in Cobh and I loved both places.

The thickness is strong in this one.

I think you will find he was born in Ballyshannon, but raised in Cork.He even referred to Cork as his hometown.

    You seem charming.

I'm a Donegal man living in Cork (like Rory Gallagher), I think Cork city is not that great compared to actual cities like Belfast and Dublin. (I have lived in both).

There are some lovely picturesque towns and villages though: Kinsale, Cobh, Courtmacsherry, Bantry etc.

The city accent is genuinely hilarious especially on the 'hard lads'.

People seem a bit standoffish in my experience but i have met some great people aswell.

In conclusion: It's better than monaghan but not as good as kerry

All cities, towns etc have people who will defend it to the death etc

I'm from Cork and love it but I'm not one of the "pure Cork like" type of people.

I know people from Dublin who cringe at the "Salt of the earth Dublin" shtick

People usually take pride in where they come from but there will always be an element who go over the top.

Lived there as a student, loved it. Not my favourite place in Ireland but it holds some great memories. Before I moved there I was small minded like so many people, thinking it would be a kip. Yeah there is some bad parts, and some bad people but there is a charm about the place that I can't describe. I love going back to visit and some days I really do miss parts of it as there is nowhere else like it.

I think Cork City is improving a huge amount and quite dramatically in the last few years though. Despite all the nay sayers, I think the European City of Culture in 2005 was the catylist for it.

Also I think the main drainage project transformed the city centre. Unfortunately, in the past the Lee used to really stink and I think it was having an economic impact on the city by putting people off and pushing them into the suburbs.

I think Cork City needs to be like the big access gateway to the county. Almost like a giant Kinsale if that makes sense.

Much more should be being made of the harbour and riverfronts.

I love Cork. It's one of the best small cities in Europe and the county has some of the most unbelievable scenery.

You call them thick and yet you can't even spell arrogant correctly.

I'm from Cork and glad to be from there. I like other towns and cities in Ireland too but I find Cork has a unique look and feeling. I think some of it has to do with about three quarters of the city being burnt down in 1920. Most of the rebuilding was done after we had secured our independence (the City Hall wasn't built until 1924 for example), so it has less of a British look to it than some other cities and towns in Ireland, with less of the Georgian/Palladian architecture around.
I like the size of Cork, I find it's got everything you need but at the same time you can still walk to anywhere in the city relatively quickly. There's always great craic and isn't as overrun with tourists in the summer as Galway and Dublin seem to be. I'll be really sad to leave here in September when I move to the UK permanently (work related). Luckily I'll only be a 90 minute flight away. :)

I lived in Cork City for two years. I enjoyed my time down there but there wasn't much happening, particularly on the music front, and especially in terms of electronic music. Electric Underground @ The Liquid Lounge was the main night down there during that period, with an occasional 'big name' DJ in The Savoy. I'm sure there was plenty of hard-working guys behind the scenes, but the end product just wasn't very good. I don't think there was a decent sound-system in the city. And this was during the boom time. Dublin had an embarrassment of riches when it came to clubs and club nights. I used to travel up there regularly for a decent night out. I've been to a number of European non-capitals, and only Nice had a worse electronic scene.

Most people have only positive things to say, so I don't think anyone's 'picking' on Cork. And in fairness, Dublin and Limerick regularly receive negative attention.
