I should have asked the question clearly. What makes an easy calving bull? Any recommendations for an easy calving F-H bull? And why?

Allot depends on the diet you feed the cow/heifer too.
I've seen cows need sections to easy calving aa, & first timers throw ch out no bother.

The ICBF tries to put numbers on things. Can anyone explain the numbers representing easy calving?

They give star ratings within breeds and across all breeds. The more stars the better. They also give a % calving 3 or 4. This is hard calvings needing a lot of assistance and even C-sections. You want as low a figure for that as possible.

My experience of star ratings is they mean nothing and cattle traders seem to ignore them.

That's because reliability figures are so low. Anyone using AI will tell you that Calving Figures are pretty much on the ball, once the reliability is high, greater than say 80%.

Why ask for someone to explain the calving figures when you have no faith in the easy to follow star rating system. It was brought in to make figures easy to understand. The star rating is based on the figures and is there to allow easy comparison of bulls. As pat says you've also to look at reliability but that applies to all figures.

Trying to use Herd Plus to select bulls by trait. I want to select for easy calving but this does not seem to be an option? Calving interval or survivability seem to be the only options?

My herd is a PBR herd all F-H. If I use a bull such as HMI (100% H) which it says on the catalogue can register calves off. Does this mean that there will be no issues for me with a F-H herd. Or do I have to use another bull to register calves off of.
