there was a wheel down at the Point a few years ago, i think people on this christened it "Harry's Hoop'
it wasn't much of a success as far as i remember.

Think it was only planned as a seasonal thing, not sure how the uptake was, but surely it would be better than a cable car that only brings you from one side of the river to another.

Should create a cable car to bring you from Dublin to Dingle. Has a bed in it to sleep in. Market it as the tour across Ireland that never stops.

I can see a year or so of popularity where people go on it once for the novelty, and then after a year or two it is severely behind in profits vs construction cost, while still having to pay to run/maintain it - and then when they go bankrupt, the state gets dumped with the cost of dismantling the eyesore.

Remember: People who run idiotic construction developments, get to profit from it immediately with salaries + bonuses and whatnot (especially management/higher-ups who actually administrate all of it), and usually they borrow money to fund this stuff - so when they go bankrupt, and when what they've constructed becomes unprofitable, the rest of society gets saddled with the costs.

Make-work construction projects that are entirely useless, are a great way to get rich while saddling the rest of society with the costs.

the Harrys Hoop thing was only temporary - we had borrowed the wheel from Belfast and it was set up at the O2 to try and bring tourists towards the never-finished "Point Village".

Cable Cars along the liffey!? from where to where like?

Maybe if they had it from the middle of town into the middle of Phoenix Park or to the zoo it might work out, but having it along the quays for absolutely no reason other than to sit in a vehicle above the ground, then it wont work.

at least ONE of the destinations needs to be of interest to tourists.

Great idea, call it "The ride of your life". Would be afraid of falling out of it half way through though.

They had one in Bray many years ago, not for the feint hearted by the looks of it.

I was in Salzburg at the beginning of March and we took a cable car up the top of a mountain.
Lovely views and with the rigidity of the car you couldn't feel much wind. Prolem was it wasn't cheap, 20e per ticket.
I think it would be a fantastic idea.

In fairness, Crough Patrick is a small hill compared to some of the mountains around Salzburg.

Not sure I would take a cable car up it my self if there was one. Climbing it is an achievement, and not even from a religious point of view.

If there was a sporting influence for it, say snowboarding/skiing in the winter should there be the snow, or mountain biking in the summer, then definitely. However that would totally take away and exclud its current target market, that surely Westport and the surrounding villages benifit from especially at this time of year.

I see your point, climbing CP though is not for everyone however. I'm thinking older people who are too weak to climb so this could be a good idea.
It would never get "off the ground" though planning wise.

Mods, can we made threads started based on an Indo article a bannable offence? The crap the Indo comes out with beggars belief.

I love the way people are knocking it before they have even seen the plans. Ohh how so typically Irish and enlightened.

Yes, all current affairs articles should come from the Guardian, Observer, Irish Times or the New Statesman. It's the calibre of publication the highbrowed denizens of AH have come to expect if they are to pass comment on the piece.

A cable car from Dublin to Holyhead would be useful!

The plans? A couple of towers and a cable car house either side of The Liffey, and some cables spanned across them. Going from one sea level point, to another sea level point.

build an indoor water park... would get more tourists/locals I'd say than a cable car.

Also probably a high percentage of less savoury visitors.

They built an indoor tropical island place outside Berlin which has nearly everything to relax.
Don't know if 80 mill would be enough but that would get the people flocking.

    http://www.tropical-islands.de/en/attractions/tropical-world/

This is it, would appeal to people to many people from further afield as well.

See, that's a much more sensible idea - something people can go to, to enjoy Summer things, even in the dead of winter when the weather is crap (perfect for Ireland); how many people are going to hop on cable cars outside of the 3-4 months of good weather we get a year? :)

anything that's considered a "fun day out" would be ruined by scum.

at least the cable car idea would be hopefully too "boring" for them - although i'm sure if it did happen, they'd still get their free travel passes for the cable cars and be up there shooting up heroin and drinking p!ss-cans all day.

I've been there a few times, and as you said in the winter it is fantastic.
It is a constant 32 degrees and I believe the water is 29 or 30 degrees.
There are water slides, apartments to rent, tents, sand etc.
    I seriously recommend it.

I'd doubt that somehow, the price of admission would put them off immediately. It's something like 50e to get into the Berlin one.
    Plus they are heavily monitored.
A far better spend of money and I wouldn't object is tax payers money was also used.

Was on a plane last week flying out of Dublin.

It's quite an ugly city from above, in fact all of the Irish cities look poor.

I really couldn't disagree more. Dublin looks great from above. You have a fantastic bay, mountains, rivers, parks and islands and peninsulas that make up a pretty great physical landscape. I love taking off from or landing in Dublin.

Looks lovely at night time as well. Then again so do most cities.

well sure you can get a flight to spain for that money then can't you.
spend it there rather than give money to the scum that run this country (IMO)

Right, so you spend "50e" to get to Spain. then you need a hotel, transport, food etc etc.
You can't compare such a scenario, do you really think the Germans would have bothered building it if they had your attitude?
Besides, if you aren't happy with who runs the country then you can always apply to change things... The "scum" in charge have given you that possibility.

the germans are mad anyway, so it doesnt surprise me.

plus, yeah the 50euro may get you entrance, what about the pricey food and drink (clearly if it was built here, we'd pay irish prices for that, so dont give me the german prices for the food and drink)

also i'm sure it would cost you quite a pretty penny to rent one of their luxury cabanas, or beach huts and what not, plus then the reality of what you're doing would kick in, and you'd realise that it's all a load of sh!t because you're under a dome, and not getting a tan!!?!

    Spain wins AGAIN.

    something similar in london already

    http://www.emiratesairline.co.uk/the-view

And because it goes from nowhere to nowhere else, no one ever uses it.

I think the view of the river is one of the nicest things about Dublin. Looking up the water through the bridges (except for the awful train bridge at the Custom House which ruins the view of the bay). Massive pylons would ruin that utterly. And it would probably only run for 6 months before being declared untenable, and we'd be stuck with them forever.

So no, I'm lodging my objection right now.

    For the love of God.
Bring your own food and drink (Lidl,Aldi) you live in Ireland so you don't need a tent or apartment. That's for the tourists if they want them.
It's a Saturday morning on a crap, snowy/windy/raining crap day, you can't just get up and fly to Spain now can you?
I would take my 50e or whatever the cost and drive down to this place for the day.
It is not built as an alternative to Spain, Italy or the South of France, it was built as an alternative to spending the day at home looking at the depressing weather.

ah no, i get all that - and it looks absolutely fantastic - if i was in the Berlin area i would try and visit it! im not saying it's crap, i'm just saying with all the factors considered, it just would not work in this country.

you'd be looking at (let's say like in berlin - 50euro entrance fee), on top of that, you'd have the journey to get to whatever part of middle-of-nowhere-Meath they put it in, then back, you'd need to feed yourself - which in this country you can't even get a basic popcorn chicken meal in a kfc without scraping a tenner, (plus in this country it would most likely be 100% not allowed to bring in outside food or drink)....

then a drink or two (it's ireland - if you're off for the day and you're bothered to go to one of these places - you'll most likely be having a beer or two) that's another few bob - then there's the whole thing of it being a failure because it's too expensive, they lower their prices, and BAM - full of scum, place ruined, kids p!ssing everywhere, needles in the sand, WKD bottles ripping up kids' feet and junkies drowning

in a nutshell - IRELAND would happen to it.

I'd be for this, add some money to the economy from tourists and that.

But the only issue I see would be that Ireland is incredibly windy, I know in ski resorts that gondolas and chairlifts stop once the wind picks up over a certain speed in case the wind blows the cable(s) off the mounts.
