2 inches deep the surgeons cut, that's deep, not wide or long. And that was the small part of the operation! Still have to go in for the rest! 3 inches Deep, inch wide, 5 long, gallstones won't have a patch.

Throw in the daily packing of the wound on top of that which is excruciating

I worked on a surgical ward for years and a lot of people had to get sedation when their pionidal wound dressing was changed. That and breast abscess wound. The tape dressing that's packed in, it was horrible having to shove that in to a gaping wound, the pain seemed incredible.

Kidney stone, but only the pains in the side/back when i was making it's way down. I was in pain so much that it knocked me off my feet for a few minutes. It felt like someone pinched me when it came out.

Not me, but I remember Hugh from my class in secondary school dislocating his thigh bone on the hurling field one Fri afternoon.

    He squealed like a girl.

The paramedics quickly arrived on the scene though. Snapped that thigh bone right back to whet it belonged.

Only Prob is, they trapped (forgive me, it was twenty ago) his nut or something in the joint socket.

He squealed like a lady then.

noooo no no no no ...

I wish I have never seen this thread, brings back memories. Although in comparison with most of you I've lived through no pain, yay lotsa stuff to look forward to, thanks folks :(

A couple of knee dislocations that were sore but nothing in comparison when I "finally" ripped off the ACL completely. That had hurt.
Breaking my leg right above my ankle, both bones, the sound still haunts me.
    And wisdom teeth, them bastards.

Who is going to judge the winner?

No one wins this game, I'm afraid.

Okay i originally said childbirth but I change my vote to tooth abscess.

That was horrific. I'd rather give birth pain relief free than get another tooth pulled. The abscess pain was unbelievable.

    But is there cake?

I woke up during a colonoscopy, that was painful - but I knew it would be short lived. I think it's constant pain that grinds you down - had a migraine for 6 weeks that was awful but had a particularly bad migraine once where I was given petadine for - thought my head had exploded - awful. Tooth pain is another gnawing, grinding f*cker - as is kidney stones.

Not for anyone with gallstones and tooth abscesses. The guy with the testicle caught in his hip socket can have all the cake.

My head got smashed open last year, and my ear was cut off and dangling by a fleshy strip. They sewed it all back together without anaesthetic. hence, last night, i shrugged off a fractured larynx and discharged myself. Couldn't face another needle. People who have suffered severe pain will understand, others, not so much.

I stepped on 2 rusty nails that were so long they went right through the top of my foot when I was 12 at the beach. Still remember my mother pulling the board out of my foot as I screamed the beach down. Pneumonia and pluresy are good contenders also.

Abscess on my wisdom tooth. Started on the Saturday night. Was living in Belgium at the time so NOTHING opened on a Sunday. Couldn't even get pain killers. It was Monday afternoon before I got to see a dentist and get antibiotics. But them on top of not being able to eat for so long made me vomit for the next few days if I took so much as a sip of water. That was on top of the abscess. Genuinely wanted to die. I've had a gum transplant and all four wisdom teeth out at once too which sucked. And a cervical biopsy that I'll never forget the pain of

Burst appendix, the pain built up for 3 days before I finally relented and went to the hospital.

I hate this mentallity! If you're suffering from a serious pain/side effect then GO AND GET IT CHECKED OUT!

My grandmother had chest pain for 5 hours and refused to get it checked out, every excuse in the book was thrown. "just indigestion", "I just need to lie down". All this crap.

Nobody really understood at the time, but she was having a heart attack. She went into cardiac arrest a few hours later and died.

Another lad I know got a tackle playing hurling. Light pain in his chest, got worse through out the day. Wouldnt go get it checked out. Left if for the whole night, woke up the next morning in severe pain and could hardly breathe.

Turns out a minor collapsed lung developed into a "tension pneumo-thorax" and nearly killed him. Had to be taken by ambulance to hospital.

Stop playing the "tough man" (I say this because men are the worst for it), stop dismissing your symptoms and go get it checked out if its hurting you that much.

FYI: prolonged chest pain if you're 40+ that may (or may not) radiate to your left arm is a medical emergency.

I had a massive abscess in my upper jaw that was pressing on my trigeminal nerve, causing what is charmingly known as "the suicide pain". I ended up asking a chemical-friendly person I know to source me some cancer strength painkillers which I washed down with vodka, because I was giving long, serious thought to smashing myself in the face with a hammer to cause the abscess to rupture.

Far less serious pain but still pretty awful, this morning I had an endoscopy which is where they put a camera down your throat to look at your stomach. When the camera goes in you think are choking so your body goes into panic mode and you start trying to gag the camera back up, but it's unyielding and so you end up with a very sore and bruised throat. I could cope with just that but I've either taken a bad reaction to the sedation or I have some kind of flu because I've been throwing up through my sore throat all day.

Pffft. Had that. No biggie. There's worse, much worse. Believe me.

That all sounds sore Stavros, I didn't even know you could fracture your larynx - but if I did I wouldn't shrug it off - would it not affect your speech? Hope your ok.

We lived in the middle of nowhere and don't speak the language so was hard to even find a dentist. I remember seeing snow on the Monday and sobbing uncontrollably thinking I would have to go another day without a dentist.

We don't, we got a fecker who keeps getting hurt over here, and who wishes they wouldn't. An enthusiastic teenage rugby player putting you into a headlock will not end well. Take note.

To merge another AH thread into this one-If you had to live through your most agonising pain again but had the option of taking heroin to medicate it what do you think you would do?

Actually I tend to agree with this! I think the more damages you take, the more accepting you become of the pain. that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt to all bejesus. Just that the next one always is worse than the last one so I think your threashold increases.
