Kids in America named after cars e.g. Mercedes, Porsche.

As a general rule of thumb, if you can't afford it, you probably shouldn't name your kids after it.....

When naming your child, a handy rule of thumb is to ask yourself: would I buy a used car off someone with that name?

If you wouldn't, then you probably shouldn't call your child that name.

The car company is named after a girl

One of my friends is a teacher and has a few kids called Courage, Happiness and Pride in her class. I know it's a cultural thing but I don't know how I'd react to an adult telling me his name was Happiness.

That's really common in certain African nations. I used to work in a job where I came into contact with a lot of people from these cultures. Names were amazing: Wonderful, Magnificent, Previous, Beloved. Had a Sunday once, too.

Given the Irish adoration for vowels, don't think we can slag them off tbh.

My OH has a lot of dealings with the Chinese who try to be more western by taking English sounding names. One girl took the unfortunate name of 'Swallow'.

I really don't like madey-uppy names ending in ayden. Hayden, Brayden, Sayden and so on.

My friend spent a while teaching English in a school in Thailand. A lot of the kids were named after famous people, including one who was called Piers Morgan.

Young lad in my neices class called Harrison. I never fail to roll my eyes when she says his name.

    What's wrong with Harrison?

Two American Presidents + Harrison Ford (is that 3 so?).
    Easy to spell and pronounce.

    I like it!

Was in the doctor's today and the was also people waiting to see the community welfare officer in the waiting room.

One of these had her two kids with her and they were jumping around and being a bit boisterous, as kids sometimes are.

Anyway, she was trying to get the girl to sit down and after 3 or 4 times asking "Tia" to sit down, she middle-named her...

"Tia Maria! I told you to sit down!"

I sat there, open-mouthed for at least a minute.

You be hard pressed finding anyone in the 1901 census with the names:
Seán, Seamus, Pádraig, Peadar, Rory, Áine, Eimear, Niamh let alone Sinéad (Which was probably coin by Dev's wife at that time).

In general everyone had very anglicised names

There was also the Church influence - babies were to be given a saints name. So my mother Sheila was actually named Cecelia on her birth cert. There are 657 Cecelias to 34 Sheilas in the 1901 census.

I'm really mystified by this 'trend' . This claim about "made-up" Irish names keeps appearing in posts.

Please enlighten me. I may be out of touch but I can't say I've come across any fabricated Irish names. I'm not saying they don't exist but for the life of me I can't think of any.

Can you give me some examples?

    Sneachta, Saoirse, etc. Ugh, horrible.

Saoirse came to be as a result of the 1920's Independence wars, it is hardly a new name. You'd love my apartment block, 10 homes, 8 with kids, and 2 Saoirse's :D

I think it sounds nice, I just find it a bit gimmicky, like people getting stuff in Chinese tattooed on themselves

I think one of the worst names I have heard is Danika. I also know someone who called their child KC. It's not short for anything, just 2 letters.

In general I think the name Cormac is awful.

At least the parents know what Saoirse means...

I remember hearing of one gob****e who had the character 足 tattoed on his arm... and it means "leg"!!! :D

Apparently he "thought it looked cool"...

lol reminds of the joke in A Fish Called Wanda about the kid being called "Portia"

"Why is she called after a car?" etc..

I teach a girl called Tia Maria, told the whole class proudly that her father was drinking it the day she was born. Her sister Brandy on the other hand....
