What is the age criteria for starting an apprenticeship?

Basically I have a garage willing to take me on as an apprentice, but I am 26 and have been told that that might be too old? Can't find anything online about it, it only says you have to be 16 to start one, but nothing about being too old to do one.. Any advice, input or answers greatly appreciated!
