Always has Garda presence outside his gaff too. Even when not present for long periods.

But is also happy to close Garda stations that serve the public.

He was worried about his safety so he took two Garda drivers (what use they'd be in Mexico I have no idea) and his wife along for the trip ?

I'm not the biggest Shatter fan by any stretch, but in this case it's hardly like he was visiting an EU country. How many thousands have been killed in the recent cartel wars in Mexico?

Sure he was hardly visiting areas like that. It was a trip to Mexico City, and I'd say the embassy would have organised local police to help instead of flying two Guards out to there.

States in the article there was believed to be no threat and that if there was one personnel would be drafted from the emergency response unit. Shatter pushed to bring his two drivers (one of which was paid overtime as he was supposed to be on leave).

If he thought there was a real threat why the hell did his wife go with him ?

I'm not sure what you want me to say to that. Their plans are agreed with the host country well in advance, I'm not privy to them unfortunately.

Are you implying that no security should go anywhere with any of our politicians? What would the Gardai do if Michael D was shot at when he was visiting South America? Or is it only for politicians that you don't like?

+1. Those cartels can easily kill a town load of people, what the hell could 2 Gardai do against them that the others can't?!

Should be banned from office and better yet the whole country.

Well they were armed

Just saw that they cleared it through diplomatic channels to allow them to be armed. Even so, what would two Gardaí likely armed with handguns do if the cartel roll up with machine guns.

I remember visiting Egypt in 2003 and each tour bus was protected by an armed guard with a machine gun. Real threat, real response.

Did you read the same article as I did? Where does it say they were unarmed? I took from it that they were armed and special arrangements were made to allow them to carry their firearms.

Well he's a foreign politician for one and can be used as a ransom.

However, that's kind of the point. He was in Mexico City probably travelling between hotels and diplomatic functions. Not exactly roving around the Juarez cartel controlled area of Mexico. No real threat and no need for them.

Take into account this was a government minister visiting on a diplomatic trip for St Patricks day. When's the last time the cartels decided to wander in and attack visiting government ministers for no apparent reason ?

There was no threat, Shatter was more than likely just bringing the fellas along because he knew he could and that having them there to do his bits and pieces would make the trip more enjoyable for him and his wife.

What others do you want? Do you think Obama would hire a couple of local Dubs to protect him when he visited here?
I don't know whether he needed them or not, but you don't just go and hire some randomer off the street for protection in a foreign country

No, but local Mexican police would know the situation much better than the Gardai.
Comparing Obama to Shatter is a bit of a stretch isn't it? They are in no way comparable.
