Learning to drive abroad, getting foreign licence & then driving in Ireland?

    Friend of mine is from an eastern European non-EU country, lives in Ireland f/t, has Irish citizenship. He is going home in the summer for a month or something and plans to learn to drive on a fast track intensive course, a lesson every day or twice a day or something, and get his licence there, when he returns to Ireland can he then drive here on his foreign licence? Lives in Ireland f/t not a tourist. His country don't give provisional and full licences like we do, they simply give driving licences (full) from what I understand. Personally I don't have a clue. Thanks.

    I notice at least one insurance company (that advertises on TV) has a clause where their deals are for people who 'have passed the test in Ireland or the UK' - not sure how legal that is, in an EU setting, but your friend might have to check that out first.

    When you arrive in this country with a Non Eu driving Lic you can drive for a year.You cannot continue on it and as your friend is already resident then I doubt that even this option is open to him.
    After that you would need to follow the normal procedure to acquire a licence here, just not having to hold Learner Permit 6 months, but pass Theory Test EDT Programme etc.
    With the introduction of N plates in August of this year he will also be on these for a further 2 years with a max allowed 7 penalty points before disqualification.
