no icons or start button on screen

    hi guys have a dell that runs windows xp and the screen is completely blank when you start up, can go into task master alright using ctrl alt and del and tried a few things like reloading explorer exe but noting seems to work any ideas thanks

    If there is colour on the screen, right click and see if the show desktop is on.

    start in Safe Mode with networking, and run an antivirus/malware scan.

    Sounds like it could be a nasty virus/malware infection has corrupted some system files. You can run a rescue cd hard drive scan such as the Kaspersky Live CD. Windows XP is going out of support tomorrow so backing up everything and changing to Linux or upgrading to a new OS may be your best option

    Thanks for reply's i think its ****ked well its kind of good timing anyway with the ending of support for xp it was a great machine, have a lap top find it very slow compared to the old pc
