Ok not so much a buying thread as an exercise in theorycraft.

    €12k to play with

Thinking of something like This as a daily hack and want something wildly impractical on vintage tax of the American muscle variety out of the change.

    Any suggestions ?

Will be doing this end of summer if i can't get my first choice car when the time comes.

Suggest away on the second vehicle.

Personally im leaning towards something like this

    Remember budget is 12k

    YES!

    sensible hat on...
Would that camaro actually be nice to drive on our ****ty wet roads though, a big step down from the st as a drivers car I'd imagine. Super cool though. Strike me more as a car you use a few times a year than a weekend/evening sort of a car.

Thats the plan Hence the E39 525i as part of the dealio as my relatively affordable daily hack.

The older Camero sounds great and the feel of the engine is awesome, but it's road handling sucks, i don't know how many times i nearly killed myself in one. Not a very practical car for Irish roads.

Well reason I'm even considering this approach is I hate having to drive my "nice" car every day and what comes with that.

    • Door dings
    • Stone chips
    • Depreciation putting 10-15k a year on said car and associated fuel costs
    • Losing that "special" feeling using car day to day for mundane stuff.
    • Wanting something with a smooth petrol to whisk me in comfort day to day e.g. E39 525i

I'm caught between wanting the daily/toy(investment) classic ratio to be something like 3k/8k with 1700 or so put aside to pay tax+ insurance for both or the better part of it at least (about what I'm paying ATM anyway)

More I think about it the more having a sub 3k comfortwagon appeals as a throwaway car that if anything terminal happens I can wipe my hands of it (525i e39s are a fairly reliable beast though I hear)

    Hmm

    ;;; associated fuel costs

will 525i be not similar in consumption to ST in overall scheme?

Currently getting 19-21mpg I'm guessing 25mpg which I can live with to have a non diesel with a simple and smooth engine (no turbo issues etc)

The daily wouldn't be my main concern really
