I know the ad says it needs a little work (mostly cosmetic I think) but NCT until 12/14. €56 tax :D:D and a 5l V8

    All for €1750 :cool::cool::cool:

    Love it!

"NOW THE BAD NEWS,THE CAR NEEDS WORK AS IT HAS THE DREADED RUST BUG.THE TWO FRONT WINGS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED OR REPAIRED AS DO THE REAR ARCHES,AFTER THAT I WOULD SAY FUEL PIPES ETC"

How bad can it be? It passed the last NCT not that long ago....

...edit.. oh wait, you misread that. It doesn't have any NCT. It has tax till the end of the year alright.

Still my favourite S-class of all time the W126. With the V8, the only engine I would want in one :)

Whoops my bad. Could have sworn it said NCT earlier because I checked it carefully. Looked too good to be true! and as usual, it was :(

Front wings are an easy fix

Check in the boot under the rear window for rust there, common rust patch.

Beware of rotten chassis legs (screwdriver through them job )

Upgrade to the post 86 brakes/W140 with this one, those 279mm brakes aren't up to the job on a 2.8 let alone a 5.0!!!!

Other stuff includes faulty window regs, failing fuel pump (external beside the tank, rich running (faulty WUR) and failing central locking (module in the bay)

Otherwise an epic find at that price especially with that interior, they command at least double that price (or in our case, a fraction of that ;))

I usually check against carsireland these days as a matter of course. It showed there was tax but no NCT. Them ads, one can never believe them :)

Heated front and rear seats on a 1983 Merc... I mean how much would that have cost someone!! I wonder if it was an ex-government car.

Changing gears is the fun part... I don't know what I would do with my left hand if I had to drive an automatic.

I've driven only one automatic so far. Volvo S80 2.4 petrol.

I would have to suspect that you have never driven an auto? There is nothing fun about changing gear in a luxury car… You would use your left hand in the same way as you would for 90% of the time you do when driving a manual.

It's hardly the sort of car where a manual would be preferred, it's not like you'll be redlining it away from the lights to beat the corsa with L plates beside you.

And the best argument in favour of an automatic is that it is far quicker away from the lights than a manual :)

No way man! We did quarter miles for years in FTOs and the manuals were always faster

At the risk of totally derailing the thread I'd argue that it probably depends on the autobox, thery're usually set up to change at optimum revs for fuel economy/engine stress etc, but the thing with a manual that as long as you change before topping out on the power band you'll wring more speed out of every gear.

On an auto that old I'd be pretty sure that a like for like race with the same engine, the manual would beat it every single time.

Anyone got two 5l V8's, one auto, one manual so we can try?

You really need to drive more automatics.

There is nothing worse than driving a nice big barge with a manual box. I'll give you a spin in the Legend at a meet when I get it on the road again. You'll be converted.

A manual merc is just wrong. Horrible things to drive.
Any merc should be an auto. Manuals are like trying to stir porridge. (Only exception I've driven is the 190 Cosworth)

Why would I have so many gears? (I assume you think I have the F&F box) Sure, I like changing gears and all that. I think it would be too boring to drive an automatic, or overly comfortable car.

Just light hearted humour, each to their own! I drive a manual too, just can see the point of auto's for particular type of cars.

I want my next car to be Auto and overly comfortable.

Spoken like a man who couldn't drive nails. :p

Anyone that gets beaten off the lines by a standard auto can't call themselves a good driver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,578 ✭✭✭✭unkel

You lads must have driven some crap autoboxes ;)

Decent modern autobox is always quicker from 0-100km/h, except when the manual is driven by the manufacturers professional testdriver (who doesn't mind wrecking the clutch after a few goes)

Quazzie is the exception though. Sure he's a better driver than Senna :p
