We have a BIG problem!

Was in the swimming pool today when a group of school kids came in for swimming lessons, all boys aged about 10. I was shocked that at least 40-50% were quite seriously over weight.

It's hard to remember what it was like when I was that age in school (over 30 years ago). I can only think of 1, maybe 2 heavy kids.

The S**te you she kids eating today is shocking, having said that it's no surprise when you go into a convenience type shop- nothing but cheap surgery crap on sale, and offers to beat the band!

I don't know the answer but as a country we are heading for trouble:(

You should have told them, not us!

Yes, and shouted and pointed at them!

Yes, and shouted and pointed at them!
Shouting 'fat arse'. That'll teach them.

Were already in trouble. Men in their early forties are now prime candidates for heart disease and diabetes. All lifestyle related.

I did, I'm writing this for a cell in Pearse Street GS, for staring at young boy's before approaching them:p

There's only one solution, ban Special K.

In all seriousness though, yes, something should be done. Parent should be properly educated on nutritional needs and stop buying **** processed foods for their kids just cos they're handy.

Might not catch just his intended 10 year old targets.

"You fat little boy! Fat little boy, la la la!" would be more appropriate.

You're fattist. Big is the new fit.

Or some-such plattitude. What's the answer OP? Sanctions? No Onion rings on a wednesday? Have a goo at you - sitting there typing on your lap-tab-bile. What would your grandad be doing of an evening? Probably out chasing sheep up a boreen before a dinner of boiled stones. This is the future, and the future is fat.

I think its the ones that are stuck inside killing hookers with chainsaws on GTA while inhaling cans of red bull I'd be worried about. Not the ones out learning to swim.

True, but it's shocking to see kids so young, who's metabolism should be through the roof so heavy.

Ain't no metabolism that can outwork sitting on their arse playing video games all day and eating nuggets and chips every day.

Obesity is a class issue. And class is something that Irish people dont like to talk about. People from lower classes eat a lot of processed and take away foods. Take the working class areas of Ballymun and Finglas which both have a huge amount of take aways etc. But both also have DCC leisure facilities.

Within 5 mins drive is the middle class suburbs of Glasnevin and Drumcondra. Neither have any sport faculties other than a GAA club and a football club. But there is very few take aways from the size of the two suburbs. Plus the people are normal weight

Got to TCD and UCD and you will find very few,if any other weight students. But its the complete opposite in somewhere like Tallaght IT or Blanch IT

I was a kid in the 80s and ate loads of crap. If anything, there was less awareness of nutrition, and salt-laden, processed convenience foods were regularly dinner. I was still skinny though. Why? Portion sizes were a fraction of what they are, and there was far less choice. And of course less money. Going to McDonalds was a huge event every few months.
Portions are too big these days. E.g. chips. If you're getting a fish and chips or burger and chips as a treat, the amount of chips they give you.
It would feed a small family.

The sad thing is its not the kids fault...parents have to start taking control, they should bring in fines for parents who don't take action to control their kids weight, it would be against the law to let your kids smoke or drink under age which is also bad for their health, why not obesity ?

The sooner parents realise that they may as well feed the children the cardboard box , as well as whats in most of them breakfast cereals , the better .

Overweight children were swimming, swimming is exercise - perhaps what you saw wasn't the problem but an attempt at solving it?

There's a kid that gets the same bus as me some mornings by himself. He's quite a bit chubby. He was sitting in front of me the other morning, he took out a pack of sour skittles and munches down the whole bag. During which one of his parents, presumably, calls him obviously going doing the shopping because he starts explaining something he wants - doritos.

Yeah kids are fat nowadays. Parents seem to be actively feeding their kids sweets and chocolate and crisps. Sure one child in my family gets a milky way after school to keep him going till dinner. Then gets a small bag of buttons or something after dinner. As well as a cookie before bed.

Why do we have to use "obese" or any other word to dodge saying "fat",is it for fear of labeling people or something

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,396 ✭✭✭Frosty McSnowballs

Fat bastards hogging the lanes.

Wow, that's not very nice, overweight kids don't have a chance nowadays. Huh!

They sit at home on the computer and eat...."fat bastards"
They go out and do a bit of exercise...."fat bastards"

That cycle has to break, otherwise there will be fat bastards everywhere.

Doesn't "obese" imply even bigger than "fat"?

I still don't see that many overweight kids though. I don't share the same experience as people who say the streets are crawling with really fat kids. The fact the OP was shocked by it implies it's not actually that commonplace. Not saying it's not a problem, but it's one that's blown out of proportion IMO.
