    Hey all,

I haven't read all of the thread so apologies if this has already been covered...

I currently run a DELL Precision 690 as a home server. It's setup with Server 2012, Hyper-V and 3 SATA disks in RAID 5. Runs a domain controller (AD, DHCP, DNS) media/file server (Mezzmo) and application server (WSUS and VPN). I then have a laptop and tablet running off this with Domain accounts, document redirection etc setup as well. Also linked is a WDTV Live v3/streaming box.

But it's not cheap to run and it's noisy enough too, so I'm looking at scaling things back a bit..

    - One Server 2012 install running the roles above
    - Preferably 6+ TB Storage over 2 disks - mirrored? (currently have 3x 1.5TB disks)

So.. will these little micro servers handle that? Key aims are to reduce noise and the ESB bill but maintain the flexibility of a Windows server setup :)

    Cheers!

Hey, does anyone know if there is currently a better/cheaper option than €189

    Pixmania

Not sure, but this is not eligible for any cashback

Thanks for the reply. It still seems like a decent price? Or what is the lowest with the Cashback?

TBH I was looking at getting this on dabs when I remembered seeing this thread on boards.

    Cashback ended end of March.

I did a lot of lurking and trawling and this was the best https://www.serversplus.com/microserver_cashback
I am sure this will return in a couple of months.

I ordered this 8gb ram stick, can I leave one of the original stock ram sticks in with it or should I just use it on its own?

I cannot vouch for this particular ram stick but I ordered an 8gb stick and left the original one in and it works fine with 10Gb.

Ah it's just a 1gb stick? I never checked, just presumed it was two 512s, cool.

You should have 1x2gb stick as standard.

Will this come back on offer or are they on a new generation now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,726 ✭✭✭gerryk

@ballooba I suspect it will. The Gen 8 Microserver is a whole difference ballgame... it includes built in ILO and has the possibility of upgrading the CPU to a proper server CPU (Xeon E3-1xxx). They are more than twice the price, so not in the same market segment.

Sorry yeah 1 x 2gb stick. I can confirm that ram works anyway if anyone's looking for options. It's certainly a lot snappier and more usable with the 10gbs. I probably made a mistake not going for ECC ram though.

ECC is overkill for home use.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 483 ✭✭daveohdave

I don't think ECC will work in the anyway.

    It does support it.

Sorry, it's registered ECC it doesn't support. As someone else has said though, it's overkill for most applications.

Just got tvheadend set up with xbmc, reckon it's going to replace my sky if it's stable enough.

    Couple of things:

    1) What are people using for dvb-s2 and dvb-t ? I have a one port dvb-s2 and it's working fine but obviously need a few more ports and terrestrial. (I'm on Ubuntu)

    2) Probably going to put it in my utility room as there is a few satellite connections coming in there. My problem is headlessness, I know I can remote in but realVnc isn't really impressing me enough. Any suggestions?

    3) Thinking of replacing the hotswap drive holder I have with a 2.5inch/3.5inch combo and moving the os to an SSD, I'd have to use the esata port in the back but should be ok. What do people think? Any cheap combos out there?

This thread is costing me a small fortune but it's saving me in the long run (That's what I keep telling the Mrs.)

Wow - it's a year already since I got my Microserver.

Just wanted to remind people to check for dust bunnies - my drives were showing 41 deg yesterday and I had to crank the fan. I just brought it outside, dismantled it and cleaned it with a can of compressed air. I whipped out the video card as it's not used and now they have settled at 32 deg and the fan is dialed back to a whisper.

I'll soon have t add some drive space -- running at ~86% full. WD Reds are about 2/3s what they were last year, so another 3 TB I think...
