Buying a new router, need some help

I've needed to buy a new router for a while now, and I've been looking at many different things. I'm currently with Eircom, and my first query is, is it simple to just switch from ADSL2 to WAN? Do I just replace the adapter thing from Eircom with a modem? Or is there a reason I can't do that and I need to limit my potential purchase to ADSL compatible routers? If I can do that, then should I install DD-WRT? I don't think I can using ADSL.

I'm looking for a good, solid router to last, needs to have good range and stability. Cost isn't much of an issue.

Also, while I'm here, is it possible to have two sets of powerline adapters? Or would they clash with each other.

You have two choices, either bridge the existing modem and add a router or get an ADSL router with built in modem. I'd go with bridging in case if you get fibre in future which requires a completely different modem.

As you're using DSL over a phoneline you're going to need a DSL modem anyway. DSL Modems these days come with a built in router & wifi by default. There's nothing stopping you from getting a separate router & plugging it in to the WAN o/p of your DSL modem. Routers these days will generally include wifi as well as 4 or so ports. You'll need to disable wifi on the modem though. Your connections can then be made to the router ports & wifi.

I do plan on getting fibre when it's released in my area, so to bridge my current router, just buy the new router I want, leave the old router as it is, connect them with an ethernet cable, and that's it?

You need to configure the modem you've got into a bridge and add the pppoe details to the new router

Will this depend on the specific model I currently have/plan to get, or is it the same for them all and I't be easy enough to figure out?

No, this is the way to do it. Bridge it and add a better router to handle everything. It's come up here plenty of times before, just do a search here for threads on how bridge the model modem you got.
What you don't want is two routers, this will cause problems especially for consoles (double Nat)

Some on here rave about the Asus, to me they are completely overpriced. I'll let someone else with one advise
