Apple take out patent on transparent phones... early April Fools?

I read this in the Indipendant today

Apple has taken out a patent for an app that will make iphones transparent allowing users to continue to text without having to lift their eyes from the screen to avoid obstacles as they walk

They go on to say that it'll use the camera to display video of what's in front of the phone projected onto the background of the screen as you type, think Pierce Brosnan's Vanquish from "Die another Day"

Surely something this stupid and impractical has to be a prank?

I think this app was out a while ago but removed from the app store if I remember correctly.
Not sure on the reason why but at the time it definitely caused a stir and was labeled dangerous. I'm sure it will labeled 'genius' now that Apple are the ones behind it.

There's been loads of Apps like that, all they do is turn your camera on and out the UI over it.
Massive battery drain.
