    E 39 5 series BMW on the bangernomics thread - 1 owner/driver since new.

Thing im wondering - is how do you replace an E39 that you've had from new.

You go to the uk and buy a nearly new F10 520d of course.

    Fitted? Yes.

    Balanced? Don't think so.

That means I'd have to spend €120. Can't afford to throw money here, there, everywhere. Besides all of them are pretty much brand new.

Was the one you replaced pretty much brand new, if so did they see if they could puncture repair it. Happened me once got 4 new tyres and got a puncture a few days later, they repaired it and it was as good as new. Cheap too think they charged €7

Your own buzz but I'd feel a lot safer with a pair.

    Of course :)

Im thinking too much like an enthusiast - to the chap that has it - its probably just a very very nice car.

And he can replace it with another very nice BMW.

I just see them as legendary in terms of saloons - but a non enthusiast won't see it that way.

It looked like the caravan detached from the van and went towards the BMW without the driver knowing. I can't stress enough that I don't actually know if it hit the BMW.

Nothing wrong with an enthusiast driving a 520d, they're a great car, much as I love e39s, time marches on.

We always used a heavy duty safety chain and cable attached to the trailer brakes so I'd imagine the caravan wouldn't have hit the cars there given the speed they should have been travelling. They pull up pretty quickly if everything is correctly functioning.

    Your absolutely right :)

On this buying from the Uk thing - is that still worthwhile these days.

And if (for example) one was to buy a 2nd hand Skoda from a Skoda dealer in the Uk - how does warranty work.

Say if its a "Skoda approved" type set up - could you get repairs sorted out through Skoda here - and have it all sorted out.

Or is there in effect no warranty - unless you take it to a dealer in the North :(

Not 100% positive on this, so is the 1.8 tdci engine in the mk1 focus the same as that in the mk4 mondeo? Did I read somewhere that there was two types of 1.8 diesel engines in that focus, the latter tdci being the better? I take it that the 1.8tdci is one of the better engines in the mk1 focus?

It can be worthwhile if you're looking for a particular spec. We went to the uk for my mothers car as there were only 3 or 4 ever sold new in Ireland with that spec and none of them were for sale. We didn't save anything significant but got FSH and excellent condition, and spec.

There are still savings to be made on regular stuff, if there wasn't, donedeal wouldn't be full of uk imports for sale at decent prices.

Re warranty, it can vary. A dealer or franchise warranty wouldn't carry over in ROI, but a manufacturers warranty eg.Kia 7 year warranty, Hyundai 5 year - carry over.

Some other brands are more complex, some UK VWs had a 3 year warranty in the UK and 2 years here. Had an 05 passat in 08 where the fuel pump went and vw Ireland wouldn't cover it but VW NI would.

Im open to correction - but the Mk 1 Ford Focus originally came with a 1.8 Tddi engine - which I thought was direct injection but not sure.

It definitely didn't come with the common rail though.

That only came later - so yes - there are two types of 1.8 turbo diesel on the Mk 1 Focus.

The non commonrail one was reckoned to be a bit noisy and not overly fast.

But probably more reliable then the commonrail.

The common rail was supposed to be a significant improvement for driving and refinement.

Been in a 1.8 tdci Mk 1 as a passenger - and certainly it was very refined engine wise.

Came with both. They're both DI but the tdci is a common rail.

Yeah sorry - meant to say - that it originally didn't come with the tdci engine at launch - only the tddi.

And that the Tdci only came out later on in the Mk 1 production run.

Was around 02 the TDCI version of the Mk 1 Focus came out.

The only reason I'd go to the UK for an F10 is to buy one that isn't diesel. ;)

And was that tddi engine discontinued then, or did it run along with the tdci? Just trying to clarify so i'll know what I'm looking for!

I think that's a Honda Accord rather than 5 series. First of all, the alloys aren't a BMW design and the petrol cap is on the passenger side whereas it's always on the driver's side in BMWs.

Then again I just looked at the pic again and there's a black nose sticking out in front of the silver (accord) so I presume that's the BMW you're talking about. Didn't see it the first time :o

That's certainly an Accord smashing looking car imo but I just figured the car he was referring to as the BMW was the very slight view you have of the nose of a dark car directly in front of the caravan ;) .

Im sorry - im not sure when they actually stopped making the tddi :( or if they ran it side by side with the Tdci

You're not biased at all since you didn't own one before you got the 330i :P

    Yeah, re-read my post!

I owned the 7th generation model not the 8th in the picture :P. But yea do have a bit of a bias towards Honda's :o.

Ah just seen it now still took ya long enough to cop it :P:pac:.

Would wheel alignment involve going anywhere near the tie rod end bolt/nut on a car ?

2002. They switched that year so you can get both. Not seen a tddi in an 03 not to say there isn't a few about. The tddi in the 2.0 mondeo is more reliable the the tdci as it's essentially the same engine with less reliable CR injectors. The TDDI you's an electronically controlled bosch VP pump. No experience of the 1.8's but it just reading there that it was largely redesigned for the tdci version unlike the 2.0 so maybe a better bet. Start a thread on it sure.

Hmm im honestly thinking when i got my new tyres last month they didn't put the nut back right and it eventually fell off, worrying.

Think i will have to call in and bring it to their attention before someone is killed

Has happened to me before, both sides. Nuts didn't come all the way off though. Was driving for a week wondering why my car was tram lining so bad:mad:

    Edit: after an alignment also.

Tie rod / track rod end won't loosen on it's own, I be sure it was cause if they made adjustments when allignment was performed.

'twas yesterday. So if I had gotten the puncture repair done yesterday, I could've saved myself 55 euro (got it done once, they charged me a fiver), but I had to leave it and get the damage worse.
