how do I get line stats with VF modem bridged to Netgear Routerwdnr4500?

With all this activity re vectoring I would like to check my line stats but when I accessed the netgear router I cant find them anywhere!! I have the VF efibre router bridged to the netgear so does that mean I have to log in to the VF gateway??

And is there a quick way to log in or do I disconnect lan cable from router and then re - connect to VF router etc etc?

Is it now the case the VF router/gateway/modem can be bridged easily by everyone? It took me an age last year to get it sorted. I ask as it may be necessary to unbridge it for sofware updates for vectoring.

I was under the impression that bridged modems wouldn't get the necessary software update required for vectoring.

Yes, hence my questions. If I know line stats now pre vectoring then find out vectoring has been enabled I can unbridge the VF modem to get the software update BUT at the moment, and I could be wrong, its a right bind to bridge and unbridge the VF modem/gateway. However, the software update as part of vectoring, apparently makes bridging easy ie it can be done by the user. Its so long since I got fibre, last May, I am a bit out of touch.

I would imagine that the ISP should be able to manage the firmware whether the modem is bridged or not, otherwise they wouldn't enable bridged mode in the firmware. I would assume that this would be outside the PPoE session in another back channel. I believe that successful implementation of vectoring requires the participation of the modem and the DSLAM in managing crosstalk and SNR so eircom/VF are unlikely to allow themselves be "locked out" by bridged modems.

The DSLAM in traditional DSL only has brokering communication with the modem outside of IP traffic which in this case is being handed off to the router for the PPPoE session. In this case the modem is "offline" to the ISP but the DSLAM would have its SN and MAC.

VDSL is a fair bit newer, so can't say if this has changed, but I wouldnt be super surprised if it hasn't. The OP will be first to know if it is as his line will go dead the moment they turn on vectoring.

It sort of seems obvious that the ISP wouldn't permit the end user to cut them out of the modem management by enabling bridging but, as you say, nothing should surprise

Maybe there is some sort of Huawei voodoo which enables out-of-band management.
Otherwise the modem will / should go dead when vectoring is turned on.

Thats the case with cable, provisioned equipment can bridge IP traffic but is still 100% managed.

If you wanted to examine the VDSL2 spec you'd find it there if it exists I'd expect. As its gotta cross brands(Voda are using Huawei CPE but eircom us Zyxel).

Thinking about it now Vectoring is a communication link between the DSLAM and modems there is a continuous sideband link between them even after brokering. That could facilitate a standardised instruction to drop the link and poll for firmware.

oopsi am in trouble, i cant log in to VF router anymore and i have tried numerous combinations!! has the log in changed? last time i logged in was june 2013!!

yes, and I found the pieces of paper with what I thought were the new pw's. I wonder was everytihng reset when it was bridged?

I tried upper case and lower case as well. and i'll keep looking

thanks, tried all those and admin1234, still not found any other PW's that I might have used. I was switching to a netgear at same time so could have messed with another pw and.. forgot!!!

You may have to reset the modem entirely (paperclip in the reset hole) to get back to factory settings. Not legal advice, not responsible if you hose your device

It would appear from various threads that the B214 firmware is, in fact, required in order to support vectoring and that vectoring is supported on bridged modems (as I had thought). But what I had inferred from the various posts was that vectoring was not supported on bridged modems, when in fact the real issue was that VF had supplied modems incapable of supporting vectoring in the first instance and needed a firmware update (which isn't supported on bridged modems.....etc. etc.)
Apparently, once you get the B214 firmware, you can revert back to bridged mode, but that's your last firmware update.

I tried to change to password on the Vodafone router and it wouldn't let me log in anymore, so I just reset the router. Follow fat-tony's instructions and you can access it again.
