Broadband speed post-fiber when at distance?

    Hi all,

    I'm looking at buying a specific house just outside Mullingar. The house itself is great but I am really concerned about the broadband as it is outside of town.

    At the moment the house is only getting 4mb broadband and is connected to a cabinet that's on the Mullingar exchange which is fibre enabled (the exchange is...the cabinet isn't yet).

    Assuming this cabinet is going to be fibre enabled, what sort of speed and stability should I expect being far out enough now to be only getting 4mb?

    I'm not expecting to get fibre speeds, but would I at least be getting a solid 10mb?

    How far away is the cabinet from the House? i had 4Mb in Mullingar went to 50 down/20up but the cabinet is only about 400m or so away.

    Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

    Have a read of this posy by BK.

    Get an idea how far you are from your cab and you will have an idea what you might get when your cab is efibre enabled

    I think it's about 2km as the crow flies, and about 3 along the road, assuming it's connected to the cabinet that I think it is.

    Don't let broadband speed put you off buying a nice house, at some point in the futre speeds will get better. Went from 120meg in cork city with upc to 1.5meg with eircom in the new house thats 5km away from my exchange.Still can do all the same stuff net flicks works, apple t.v works, xbox one works and steam and online games work just takes longer for downloads.

    I am from a quite broadband intensive family. My father wants to be able to download movies off Sky at will, my mother is holding herself back at the moment, but he would spend ages looking all sorts of things if she wouldn't be interfering with other peoples connections.

    I myself am quite a heavy user both in terms of downloads and gaming. Few things annoy me more than an unstable connection or a youtube video that has to stutter.

    Being on the Mullingar exchange I'd imagine that the cabinet should go fibre live in the not too distant future. Is there a way to find out which cabinet it is connected to?

    If the cabinet is 3km away you are too far from it for VDSL.

    Pretty much only a local eircom technician call tell you. It'll be in their cabling logs.


    MGR has core network infrastructure so its well fed, but if you're on a long line you may be waiting for FTTH to get good speeds, if at all. I'd have a cruise around in the car and see if thers a copper cab closer by.
