Average broadband speeds in Ireland have increased, with 53.4pc of all fixed broadband subscriptions over 10Mbps at the end of last year, ComReg said in its latest quarterly review.

This is up from 31.5pc in the fourth quarter of 2012.

ComReg says that around a third of all fixed broadband connections in Ireland are now up over 30Mbps.

In terms of average broadband penetration in Ireland, ComReg reports Ireland is now at 67pc fixed and mobile penetration.

Looking at next-generation technologies, like fibre-to-the-cabinet (VDSL), ComReg claims there are now 74,540 VDSL broadband subscriptions in Ireland. Eircom aims to pass 1m homes by this summer with VDSL capable of reaching speeds of up to 100Mbps.
Mobile penetration now at 122pc

The mobile market accounted for about 74.1pc of all voice and internet subscriptions (fixed and mobile), with fixed market subscriptions (voice and internet) representing the remaining 25.9pc.

The number of texts sent continues to decline as consumers' mobile data usage intensifies.

The total number of SMS messages sent by mobile users in Ireland was more than 2.15bn in Q4 2013, down 27.6pc on Q4 2012. Data volumes continue to rise, increasing by 43.7pc in the year to Q4 2013 to reach just over 12,273 terabytes.

ComReg estimates that industry retail revenues in Q4 2013 were €788.4m, which was a 0.1pc decrease since Q3 2013.

Total industry retail revenues in the 12 months to December 2013 at €3.15bn were down from more than €3.24bn over the previous 12 months.
In Q4 2013, Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) in the mobile sector was €27 per month, down from €29 compared to Q4 2012.

ComReg says the drop in ARPU is due, in part, to lower-priced mobile plans and increased sales of bundled products, combined reductions in mobile roaming and termination rates.

There were 5,626,398 mobile phone subscriptions at the end of December, which was an increase of 0.2pc on the previous quarter. Ireland’s mobile penetration rate for the quarter was 122.2pc.

Its all lies tbh, I got 70mb broadband yesterday, say you`ll get around 50mb, , but eveen if contract says speeds are 50mb, the max download speed im getting is 1.2mb

Liars, and terrible service, how can you say its 50mb broadband when Im only getting 1 mb download speeds, plus my upload speeds are faster than my download speeds, and that never happened before

I don't believe that article either, the majority of Ireland outside of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford are still on 56k to 24meg with most users outside urban centers on 1-8meg ADSL. Eircom's fibre is only available in urban districts and not everybody who has it can get speeds of 30-70meg. There are also parts of urban areas where there is still no fibre as well.

as i said else where, when i enquired last week, i was told i could have a connection with up to 1meg download, i used to recieve updates from them (sillicone rep) but i unsubscribed.

Not at all. Nonsense. Most VDSL connections are rock solid. I've been getting 50/20 all the time for months. Never missed a beat. Something wrong with your connection possibly. Are you getting 1.2 megabits in a proper download speedtest from a fast server? Or are you getting 1.2 megabytes downloading torrents?

Would this be, because its wifi connection, my room is in attic, room right below me is where router is, and main computers speedis 50mb, using speed test

No Speed test is accurate on Wifi. So you do get 50 when using ethernet.

So, a computer in your house does actually get 50Mb and you're complaining about how this content in this link is false?

The main computer with ethernet does get 50mb, but since I never use themain one, yh I probably made a wrong statement, but didnt do it intentionally

But one thing which is not justifiable is the crap speeds im cureently getting on my laptop, before the fiber I had a very good connection, and I would have 200-400kb download speeds

Right now Im trying to d/l something which is 150mb, and my connecton keeps dying for 3rd time in a row, each time saying failed-network error, combined with getting speeds of 5-50kb, I think I have every right to be pissed off

This is driving me nuts, Just to clarify pre fiber we had 4mb, we now have 50mb, so I just cant understand why my speeds are so pitiful

One more thing why is my upload speed 7 times higher than my download speed?

Wireless speeds deteriorate with distance. If you move your laptop closer to the router, your download speeds will increase. It's similar with phone calls on mobile phones, if you're too far away from the transmitter, you'll get a bad connection. You don't need a degree physics to figure this out. I'm not sure why your upload speed is superior but there's nothing wrong with your connection.

Your complaints have nothing to do with this thread, it's all down to the performance of your router.

Im sorry, I wasnt saying you were lying or trying to discredit your thread, I hope you understand that

I was just pissed of with my speeds, and probably let it out in the wrong thread lol, but yh I had stable connection with my 10 year old router, we got new router yesterday from vodafone, and speeds are pretty poor, its nothing to do with distance, my laptop is in exact same place as always

But Ill stop posting as I derailed your thread, sorry about that

Don't be sorry... the thing is if you are getting 50Mbit on wired then your connection is ok. The problem is then in your home network. You could get a set of home plugs and set up a nee network upstairs...

Also look up about how to change your channel, as it sounds like you may have been using a different one previously (and the current one may be used by a neighbours, and/or another electrical device).

This 10Mb figure. Is that measured or is it people connected to something that more than "up to 8Mb ?" Does it take into account congested exchanges ?

Eircom and Vodafone have similar scores, they operate VDSL. The rest don't.

The stuff that isn't fixed, isn't broadband!

So Comreg what % of population can really get the "fixed broadband"? The only broadband that exists as Satellite and Mobile (4G or 5G or whatever) can't be Broadband.
