Diesel autos? - ideas?

Okay - I posted recently about Jaguar XF Vs Skoda Superb as a possibility for his next car.

Could have just booted up that thread again - but thought a new one might be better.

I suppose what im wondering is - what options are out there for diesel Autos in the 08/09 type age bracket apart from those 2 that I may not have thought off.

I know 520d is a potential option BUT - he had issues with a BMW previously - and a 520d of that age is from the era where they had the issues with the chain costing lots to fix - right????

Honda Accord would be another option if you could find one - but they are very rare.

Hes not keen on Passats

- I am however keeping an eye out on CCs which is possibly an option

What am I missing - it looks like unless Ive over looked something - 2010/2011 might be a better option for him even if he has to wait a while.

Something he doesn't mind doing incidentally.

Budget - now this is the tricky bit - he hasn't set a budget as such but is looking at things in terms what the car would cost in terms of things like fuel/depreciation etc - and factoring that into a running cost per year.

So his thinking is - he priced up a 2012 car - it cost less on fuel and tax then his current car - a lot less - but the depreciation was a lot more - and they end up thus costing about the same

Theres the new model E Class, my Dad has an auto petrol and its lovely. Can't comment on the diesels though.

Good point - only issue is - he didn't like the seats in the E Class taxis he rode in on the continent

Shame as theyd be a great option otherwise

Volvo S80 D5 Geartronic?

Not great on emissions at that stage though so tax could be high. Price should be low though and great seats and power, if a little barge like to drive.

When you say not great - what level tax are we talking.

Did think of those but was thinking the D5s mightn't be amazing on tax - and wasn't sure what the S80s like to drive.

Not overly worried about the handling (within reason) but more wondering what the ride comfort is like on them.

Bear in mind that if he is taking a loan on the car, that the cost of that will have to be factored in, in my case when I did the figures, the interest alone of on the newer cheaper to run car was going to be more than the fuel and motor tax savings, never mind the depreciation...

Good point - and tbh - I do wonder that even allowing for the fact that his current car is 1800 euro tax pa - just how savings would stack up.

The reality is - that assuming the new car is 15,000 - and assuming he saves 3 grand a year on costs - it takes imo - 5 years just to break even bearing in mind hes had to shell out 15,000 for a new car.

yeah from 2008 to 2010 inclusive AFAIK. Bloody hell, that really is one extreme to another, a E1809 car 3L plus petrol to a 4 pot 2L diesel, would he consider a middle ground like a 325 E90 bmw, E570 to tax for the 3L, you still get a nice 6 pot petrol without the diesel issues...

Good point certainly - hes considering the Jag XF - with the 2.7 diesel.

Yes they are 1200 euro to tax - so I guess - he will test out the Skoda and Jag as a starting point - and he can then make the judgement call on whether coming down to 4 pot 2 L diesel is worth the savings.

That 325 looks a fine compromise between tax and power - and nice one for mentioning it - not sure its a runner though because

1) Negative previous experience with a BMW

2) 3 series probably too small

3) wouldn't a 3 series 325 with 570 tax be an efficient dynamics model - I thought I heard those gave issues.

Ride Comfort and Seat Comfort is very, very good on them. Wouldn't be throwing one in to a bend for fun, but for motorway mile munching, it's ideal.

S-Tronic only comes on the bigger Audi's (A4 upwards) with quattro.

A3 and under get S-Tronic with FWD. Next Gen A4 is apparently getting S-Tronic boxes rather than Multitronic.
