Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It seems to me that there is a growing demand in many industries for the role of 'Data Scientist'.

Do you think demand for this type of role is genuine or is it a passing fad?

UCC are running a Msc in Data Science and Analytics. Would be interested to hear from anyone in the course (or thinking of doing it).

Requirements seem to focus heavily on the Maths / numeric side of it which would put me off.

"Data Scientist" appears to be a growing 21st Century occupation according to the Harvard Business Review. An evaluation of a job description (with comments in red), along with job responsibilities has been provided by Inside Big Data. Data Scientist has been listed as one of the top 5 jobs for Silicon Valley by CNN Money with salaries ranging from $150,000 to $250,000 USD a year, and during the last 5 years is going mainstream across many different types of employers according to MIT Technology Review.

The author essentially contends that data mining from secondary sources is not scientific. Wallace's Wheel of Science would suggest otherwise, going from observations to empirical generalizations to theory inductively.
