Ireland's Call & no Irish flag

What are peoples opinion of this song that we'll have to endure being played on Saturday along with our national flag not being on show? For away games for whatever reason our anthem isn't played & we'll see the players slightly embarrassed. Fergus McFadden along with others notably don't sing it but sing the national anthem. You could say it was written for the northern players but even they don't sing it. Rory Best, Iain Henderson, Chris Henry all look like they'd rather have God Save the Queen on. They make up about 10% of the islands population. Is it necessary to give up our anthem and our flag just to please a minority on this island who don't identify with our national identity.

If the alternative is being like soccer and not being able to compete as one Island it's worth it.

just ban the Northern Protestants from the team and then we all can enjoy that dirge of a national anthem:rolleyes:

If you want an inclusive team then compromises have to be made. It's not the Republic of Ireland rugby team that are playing so it follows on that the Republic's anthem isn't used either.

I always cringe at this song, it's embarrassing sitting beside fans of other nations when the anthems are played. And the text  Did a couple of 6 year olds write it  For a country with such a steep culture and history in music and literature, how could we not come up with something a little better.

Ireland rugby team isn't a country team, it's a nation.
Scotland and Wales don't have there anthems playing either. They have songs just like Ireland
Anthems for Scotland and Wales is actually god save the queen

I'm usually draining the lizard before the match starts, or out in the kitchen getting a can from the fridge. They could play The Vengabus for all I care.

The unionist anthem? A bit rubbish really, not much of a song.

Nobody watches rugby outside D4 anyhow so who cares.

It's because the Irish rugby team is the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland playing together, so the Irish Tricolour and and national anthem aren't applicable.

The minority as you call them are a core part of our team.

    You asked for opinions.

We should have a all Ireland Football team too. I do not mind this song if it keeps people happy in the squad.

This is one of the reasons I detest Irish rugby.I don't care what percentage of players are from the north, its either the Irish rugby team or its not.the Irish national anthem should be played at every game, anyone on the team who doesn't like it,should just leave, simple.the whole debacle shames our country, especially when they play away.I remember seeing the Americans belting out their national anthem in the world cup in,I think, new Zealand and it was embarrassing not to hear our national anthem being played, disgusting.

Wish they'd pick one or the other for the home games,it's like a mini concert before each match.

It would be nice if we sang a Danny Boy instead, that's a proper song.

I wouldn't mind if they played god save the queen and Amhran na bhfiann.

(I had to look up the spelling:o)

Fields of Athenry. Or whiskey in the jar. Who cares as long as we win..

Same with football we could have had Jennings and Best playing for us if we united the teams.

Half the team just stand there silently looking awkward during Ireland's Call. As i've said a lot of players sing the national anthem but stay silent for Ireland's Call. That shows exactly what the players make of it.

Sorry, do people actually think that Amhran na bhFiann is a good song?

Find that hard to believe. In common with most other predominantly English speaking countries we have a ****E national anthem.

If this is the sort of thing that gets you so worked up you must have very few problems in life.

I go to most Irish rugby matches at home and am a Leinster supporter.
I sing both anthems loud and proud when I hear them.

I am delighted we have a team which, amongst other things, does something positive in the North like bringing the two communities together under one team. I'll tell you something - we'd be a lot less successful without Tommy Bowe, Andrew Trimble and Rory Best. These guys are a credit to Ireland, North and South.

All the people who say our players don't perform because we have 2 anthems are talking nonsense.

    That's completely irrelevant.
