This article makes it clear to me that it is a mindset some people have... sorry I am coming to the party late on that point. Like a previous poster said, this person will only be rehabilitated if he chooses to change is mindset. His statements regarding continuing to drink displays a complete lack of understanding of what caused the death of 4 people.

It is the mentality of the person who is willing to drink and drive.

"Sure I have driven drunk hundreds of times before and I never had an accident. You would want to be some eejit to get caught by the guards drink driving." They are more concerned with getting caught - which to them is a more likely risk than they are with killing another motorist, a pedestrian or a passenger...

What astounds me is he has not shown that the incident has caused him to change his ways.

How is it not possible to fit sensors in cars to prevent all drivers from driving drunk? That would be a simple solution. And would stop people drink driving the next morning unawares.

Also, I don't think the drink drivers driving ability is the problem. I think in the case of this and other drink drivers, brawlers etc, it should be a requirement of the court that they take that anti-booze medication that prevents them from drinking.

They have proven they are not responsible enough to drink, so should not be able to

And the pro choicers would say that is not a person, but part of her body. Sentence seems inappropriate in any case.

BTW, whatever happened with that chap in Donegal who was driving when EIGHT people were killed? In 2010 if I recall correctly.

Whoah. Do you really get welfare payments in prison? That's crazy. The state convicts you of a crime and then the state pays you to do your time.

there's too much red tape in this country anyway - until the government wants to create a tax, if I had it my way - the criminals would actually get punished ( no welfare payments while they are in prison, reduced welfare payments for criminals, and repeat criminals face loosing state benefits - too many career criminal families in this country and too many repeat criminals)

So if a pregnant woman in your family or close to miscarried, you'd tell them not to worry about it as its not a person?

Legally you are correct but I'm sure the father of the unborn child grieved as much for the child as the mother. I can be a pedantic arse when I want to but this doesn't seem the time.

    MOD

Whatever the technicalities of the case or your own beliefs can we please not drag the thread off topic with the number of people killed? This is a terribly tragic case for those involved and bickering on the internet about what equates to life is unnecessary and callus.

Drunk driver who killed pregnant teacher Roisin Connolly in car crash sent back to prison

The headline in that story is an insult to the other two people killed by the drunk driver. It is inappropriate to focus on one of the victims and ignore the others.

The story itself is more balanced, but the whoever wrote the headline got it wrong.

Ugh this makes me sick :( He destroyed the lives of so many people and their families and is now free to live his life while they suffer. He had previous convictions before this incident so what's to say that he won't jump in a car and do something similar again? Yes he has a ban but being caught out several other times didn't stop him. Scary stuff.

Remove the airbags and seat belt from the drivers side of the car. That way, if he does reoffend, there's a good chance that he'll solve his problem permanently.
