Got a knock on the door tonight from a young girl 22ish selling a well known Alarm System door to door. I was nice and polite and told her I was only renting. I could see her getting upset and we got chatting. She was only on her 2nd week and last week she made 120 euro. She told me the company insisted she sign off job seekers benefit before starting with them.
These companies really promise everything and don't even give a basic to cover expenses. I rang a friend in the local Centra and he said send her in for a chat tomorrow as he is looking for someone. Door to door must be the most soul destroying job on earth and staff turnover must be huge.
Have you ever done it ? I know I couldn't

Did door to door fundraising in Clondalkin before. All day, and between two of us we raised €15.

A lad called round earlier selling stuff - I said No, he got a bit quivvery lipped and a small tear trickled down his cheek. He started to tell me his tale of woe, but the dinner was getting cold and he was a fugly gimp, so I told him to man the fcuk up and shut the door...

    ok, didn't happen, but still.....

Never done door to door myself as I know I couldnt stand it. But my girlfriend used to do Betterware and it was terrible.

It would take hours of work just to make a mere 35 euro. People could be right jerks as well. She'd see people in the sitting room just looking out... not a chance of opening the door and showing some courtesy. Asking too much.

But the one that annoyed me the most was she put a catalog in this one house, was only 2 houses down (like less than 30 seconds later) and the owner just throws the catalog out on to the road while shouting something.

Glad she doesnt do it anymore.

Genuinely feel sorry for them but they often doorstep you when you're just in, trying to get the kids to bed and you've had a long day in work.

It's hard sometimes to stop yourself being a bit curt, albeit never actually rude obviously.

I'd rather be on the dole. The closest I've got to it was cold-calling for market research for a few days. Ghastly.

That betterware stuff is pyramid selling.

To be honest if you're after doing a hard days work and someone knocks on your door when you're sitting down to dinner or chilling out you can't always expect a receptive response. Also those magazine pedlars want their magazine back, it's not as if it's yours to keep so it's an inconvenience having one shoved through your letter box. I remember having someone call to my door looking for their magazine back, they hadn't even left one to begin with; yet I had to spend 10 minutes of my own time trying to convince one that they didn't leave one. In the end I just told them to go away and make sure they didn't call again. It's hassle that most people don't need.

I would consider it common courtesy to not call around to someones house trying to sell something. If someone doesnt want to open the door to these people then they should. Although I do think giving them abuse is a bit much as the people doing these jobs tend to be desperate for a job.

Making it clear you're not interested is fine; it's actual abuse that's uncalled for. Two different things.

So many of them scam outfits - commission-only, some of it a blatant pyramid scheme... some shyte making a fortune from it while their minions work 12-hour days and don't get so much as a bus fare in expenses.
I do wonder why people fall for these "jobs" though. There's always tons of them advertised on Jobs.ie and the website for them is always like a web design student's final year project in 1998.

A lot of them don't heed the 'not interested' part, and generally call at dinner time.

Did it in Oz for "Charity", soul destroying, more so cause I was lying to raise money for these "Charities" who got very little money in most cases...

I'd never do it again, I actually went through my mini state of depression(very mild mind you) towards the end before i quit...My moral side eventually won out

Yeh true. Oh it's great to live in a 1st-floor apartment. :pac:
Only ever got a call twice - both on Saturday mornings. Airtricity and that crowd that used to sell teddies. God help them.
I couldn't do any job that annoys people. As I said, I did it for a few days, asking people to take surveys, and that would be one of the easier such numbers.

Some bloke kept knocking on the door looking for a donation for Dogs Trust. After a good few calls, my missus pointed out that going around what would be a relatively poor area, looking for people to sign into a direct debit to help 'mangey auld mutts', (her words) wasn't his wisest move.
    He never came back.

Do they get a basic set rate or is everything based off commission?

I know what you are saying. No company or person has the right to bother people in their own home. Can't argue. But on the other side I cannot agree with giving someone abuse too. Not unless they provoke it. Like not taking no for an answer while they pitch Sky TV or constantly knocking on a regular basis.

I knew a lad who did it for eircom alarm system about two years ago, they didnt pay him anything unless he got people to sign up, felt sorry for him as he was from outside of dublin and they were sending him to the roughest area's. The ****.

that sounds like a really terrible practical joke

in all fairness its stupid in this day and age to expect people to work on commission only
doubt any new regulations will be brought in though

BTW fair play op for getting her a job:)

Hollywood called they want to buy this harrowing tale of heroism, Dicaprio wants to star as you OP, thinks it will finally get him the Oscar.

Door to door sales is commission based. Knew a lad that did it for sky. He made a bit but nothing major and he was a pretty good sales man.

I'd say its really hard. The charity direct debit people are starting to annoy me though. Making me feel guilty about starving people in Syria.

The dog frightens most people away these days so its gotten better.

He would not do me justice, Decaprio is just ''plain'' compared to me. I am Allegedly bigger down there too !

Door to door is a crap job. You need a neck like a jockeys bollox and a thick skin to last at it.

I don't think I've ever bought anything from anyone calling to my door, bar a few lines for local charitable events.

I don't think that would stand up in a court of law.
