    Hi there,
just went to have my tyres balanced on a ford focus and my locknut "sheared "off, i.e, the middle part broke off. i went to a dealership to order a new one and besides the guy in the shop looking at me like I had two heads, he said a "piece of paper" should have been with the locknut , with a serial number or something in order to order a new one.....

I was wondering if someone could clarify what details i need in order to order a new one, is it the chassis number of the car, or is it something else

And if i don't have it, where can i get it from?

    Also , how much?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

You have to bring the car physically to a ford dealer and they match it up using a master set, can't be done on chassis number alone.

However it is possible for a mechanic to break the outer collar off and use a lock nut remover socket on whats left of the stud, or hammer on an under sized socket, and simply buy four new standard studs for about a tenner, after removing all for lock studs, better option IMHO to have no lock nuts.

What he meant was that when someone purchases a set of locknuts, inside the box is usually a 'piece of paper' with the serial number of that particular lockset. Rather like a keycode.
Most people would simply buy a new set of locknuts, rather than trying to mate a single broken one.

I went to the dealer , unfortunately the master key set was out at another garage, the guy there told me that it was not possible to order a new key from the one in the master key set, if possible, they would remove the ones on the car, if they get a match, and i could order new ones with a new key.

    Is this correct?

Thats kinda the long and short of it if the lock nuts can be got off easily chances are they were put on with an airgun and over tightend.

So either take them all off and replace them with lock nuts or replace them with ordinary nuts if ig was me i would put ordinary nuts on but its upto you.

So I can't order a replacement key , even if there is one in the master set that works on my wheels?

No you would need the card that comes in the little plastic bag with the key it has the code on it even at that it takes a while to get a key as far as i can remember and i think its as cheap to just buy a new set anyway.
