I have to admit I'm mildly obsessed with my cat. But not cats in general. I actually disliked them before we got her. The only reason we got cat instead of dog was because when we first moved to Ireland we were renting and the rental had a small back yard. We got cat as thought Little Kiwi should have a pet to care for. Neither of us liked cats and were quite aprehensive before she arrived. Everyone in family fell instantly in love with lovely natured, funny, affectionate, sweet, clean cat.
I know of numerous such conversions. They're lubbly. :)

None of these things are the cats fault now are they?
Who mentioned "fault"? Just pointing out the obvious holes in your "hygiene" thesis.
I'm surprised the poor creatures tolerate us at all considering in the middle ages they were killed by our idiot forefathers based on nothing but superstition.
And were equally venerated for being demigods among the ancient Egyptians. So what? It's not as if cats are reading history books, they have more sense.

Dogs have been equally maligned depending on culture. Islam is very iffy about dogs as but one example. Their wild cousins the wolf, went from demigod to pariah and has been wiped out in many areas, including this island of ours.

Me, I'll stick with my take, which is cats = well cool, cat people = bless/wtf/gtfo/best avoided.

May not be their fault, but it'd give me good enough reason to never have one.

I'd happily have a dog in the house, but never a cat. In saying that, cats are good at keeping vermin away, but they can do that from outside.

    Men like cats too.

This cat, for example, is a decorated war hero:

Didn't know about that little guy. :)

Well that is very unusual in fairness. Most people have those disgusting boxes.

Its not unusual at all, my cat is the same.

    Dogs are sh*t.

I love cats. And they don't smell. My cat goes to the door when he needs to take a piss or do a crap. I like dogs too, but cats are just better - smarter and more aethstetic.

A cat keeps clean by licking itself, what's wrong with that, I don't see it as unhygienic to do this.

I'd prefer that any day to a dog licking it's balls and then licking my face.

Actually dogs, specifically terriers are far better ratters than cats. Most dogs of any decent nature are bloody good vermin killers. "Purebreds" of the British bulldog type, among other Krufts type inbreeds that can barely walk without wheezing are to be avoided on this score.

Actually just caught a snippet of that Krufts fiasco. A bunch of banjo playing inbreeds being celebrated? GT everliving FO. Thankfully cats haven't gone down so far down that rabbit hole of insanity.

I like both dogs and cats. I don't know anyone with those litter trays though.

10 Downing St is also home to the 'Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office', the top job for a British cat. The post is currently filled by 6 year old tabby Larry.

Famous Chief Mousers from the past include Wilberforce who served during the Thatcher administration and Humphrey who worked with three different PMs in the 90s.

Really? OK. Interesting logic disconnect. As I said about cat people...

OH is a man. He is also a bit obsessed with cat. Cat likes to lie on him vertically and make herself as flat as possible with her head on his chest. She also seems to particularly like doing the figure eight thing around his legs.

You've not spent a whole lot of time around cats if you've never seen them licking their bum holes.

Dogs aren't a hassle if you want a dog and can look after it. If you can't, don't have one.

Always had dogs growing up. Great companions, so affectionate and loyal and what they can be trained to do is unreal.

What annoys me is when some who prefers one over the other starts posting about how cats for example, are better etc. Seriously grow up.

Some people will have a preference. Shocking isn't it? It's like dogs are Android and cats are Apple!

What is it with people's need to pick sides over stupid things like this?

I like both, but prefer dogs overall. Would have a cat or two in the event I couldn't own dogs.

Maybe you can point out where I said I never saw them licking their bums, the difference is they won't try and lick your face afterwards.

I want to get a dog, but i'm not currently in a position to care for one as one should. So i've been looking at getting a cat. They're more self sufficient. But, it just doesn't seem right a single guy getting a cat as a pet...

    Why?

    I'm a single guy and I have 2 cats.

So dogs are gross because they will but cats won't? A cat licks its bum, cleans the rest of itself, then you pet it, that's not really as gross?

    No.

Cats are clean and don't smell at all. Most humans smell worse. Cat smells nice to the point I don't mind breathing when snuggling my face into her.

I'm a woman who loves cats! And I'll proudly say that I'm a cat person because I prefer cats to dogs. I think they're funnier. My only crazy cat lady behavior is that I take lots of pictures of them because they're so cute. But they're not even the screen savers on my phone or computer (I like pretty scenery - sorry kitties!). My two are still kittens, so they play together, then cuddle, wash, rinse, repeat. They demand attention when they're up, always greet me at the door, greet my guests, cuddle with me at night. When I'm at home, I basically have two little shadows following me. Whoever thinks cats are aloof and not affectionate or completely independent, I don't think those people have ever owned cats before. Cats can certainly come across that way with strangers if they're shy or if they haven't been socialized properly. But they're delightful pets.

I know a lot of people don't like them, and that's fine. Have all the negative opinions about cats and the people like me who love them that you want. I really don't care. Just don't hurt them. That's all I ask.

But cats will and can lick your hand/face.

Eh, some breeds of cats are getting there. The "modern" Siamese breed is having big health problems due to inbreeding to try and get that weird skinny alien look that is preferred for some reason. They're breeding their heads to be so narrow the cats actually end up brain-damaged. It's now very difficult to get a healthy modern Siamese in the US.

Surprised at that silly generalisation from you, tbh. Do you think the same way about people who own pit bulls?
