If you are in Dublin, Tesco in finglas had windows 8 for 54e last week. I am not sure if they still have them, but you never know.

I'm gonna take a punt on the below, tis only €15, will report back as soon as he replies to my PM.

    http://www.reddit.com/r/softwareswap/comments/1zz3bx/h_oem_windows_7_pro_with_certificate_of/

Also, there's no rush, you can reset the 30 days trial 3 times so you have 4 months. Wait till the last day and simply type "slmgr -rearm" (no quotes obviously) in cmd prompt and restart, simples.

There is a site that sells cheap windows license for windows and office. They buy the license off liquidated companies and sell the codes on for cheap

I bought the 35$ Win 8.1 Pro, but didn't get a chance to install it yet as my PC hasn't arrived.

Let us know how you get on.

Sounds like the company called Discount-Licencing that we get the bulk of our licences from

Will do. Bought Windows 8 for $12. Got the key about 2 minutes after I sent the payment via Paypal. Will download and install tonight when I'm home and report back!

Bit off topic but since windows xp is nearly dead, I've moved over to Linux mint. Seems to be faster than windows and does everything I need. Plus its free!

I tried Ubuntu for about a month on the laptop but ended up going back to Windows. Just didn't have the patience to learn a new OS tbh!

I ended up buying Windows 8 for $12 (€8.65!!!) instead off a guy on Reddit Software Swap. Happy to report that installation and verification went smoothly and everything is running fine! Definitely recommended!

On a side note, Windows 8 Metro UI if a pain in the hole. Hate it! Downloaded Classic Shell for free ASAP and all is well in the world again! :)

Brian, thanks for the update, I'm thinking of doing something similar (with Windows 7). Is this fully legit?
So basically I get an ISO or they send me an ISO link, and I buy the activation key from them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭..Brian..

Will be a slightly different process with each seller. With the guy I bought it off, I PMd him what I wanted, her PMd back with the price and his email address for the PayPal payment. I logged into Paypal and sent the payment. 2 minutes later he PMd with just the serial key.

I then logged on on to MS and upgraded to Win 8 as per instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

They serial key verified immediately with no problems so everything is ligit.

If it's a Windows 7 key, just download the relevant .iso and burn to disc or usb and install as normal. Enter your serial key when prompted and job done. Make sure you get the matching version of Windows to your key though!

The reddit software swap key worked fine for me, I just did as ..Brian.. described above, so far so good. Very cheap.

Be careful who you get on reddit software swap, but as long as they've got good feedback, you're pretty much guaranteed to get exactly what you want for a ridiculously cheap price. Wouldn't be worth their while 'scamming' you out of $10 when they've got loads of vouches.

I always forget about it and end up just paying full price for steam games but it always looks like you can buy keys for a huge discount. That and amazon gift cards...

    Agreed.
You can see the monthly listings for consistent sellers, with comments from buyers. If you see this for month after month you can be pretty sure they're reliable.

Out of interest, Does anyone know how they are so cheap, assuming they ofcourse legit and not volume license or MSDN or something.

I was assuming they must be from different regions or something?

You'll have to buy two keys. I'd say get them from reddit software swap, the link is above. You'll get them for like 8 euro each, much cheaper than you'd pay from software4students (are they even around anymore?) There could be a dreamspark deal since you're in UL so it would be free, but you'd have to go search that out for yourself.

As far as I know they are OEM codes which just means they can only be installed once and you don't get support from Microsoft for installing them. I got 8.1 pro from Microsoft for 60€ student discount so if I wanted to move it to another pc in the future it won't be a problem

Not a problem on Windows 8 OEM system builder anymore, you can use the license multiple times but only on one machine at any time, they changed it from Windows 7 OEM.
Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

    SOURCE

You also receive system updates from Microsoft for Windows 8 as per usual but cannot access support for the product from MS like you can with the retail copy.
Most people going the OEM route most likely wont need support from MS anyway, any issues can just re install.

A welcome change in policy from Microsoft imo

So that reddit option Brian linked to earlier seems to be defunct now?
    Any other avenues for us

Found this other one on reddit, but they're out of win7 keys.

New keys go up all the time. Just go to http://www.reddit.com/r/softwareswap and find a seller that has a good reputation (previous happy buyers). Check back every few hours if you can't see what you want.

i would think they are as legit as any key you get from a free key generating program..i would save my 10euro or whatever.

And either buy from an official seller or download free illegally if thats your thing.

Whats the point of spending money on a probably illegal copy?
