From recollection, I think there are many ways around it - trains, boats, clubs, apart, obviously, from drinking your own drink.

Or just throwing out the restriction and letting people get on with their lives rather than having to jump through hoops because of a law based on one religion's practice.

Yeah, you should take it up with Government. It won't affect me either way.

The only people that currently benefit from it are hospitality workers and sure their lives aren't important at all.

And get rid of the bank holiday too of course as well as entitlement for Christmas day that most people have.

I would love to see people's view of being told that they will have to work Good Friday, St. Patrick's Day (Patron saint of Ireland), xmas Day and St. Stephens Day and any other religious days that we currently have off, and not get overtime.

Agreed. If we want to remove the "tyranny" of religion from our societal norms then it is imperative that we go the whole hog.

Yeah, let's have all our bank holidays on Wednesdays, take 9th - 12th April off instead of Christmas, and get rid of St Patrick's day too. That'll show the horrible church that we're real-life grown-ups, doin' it for ourselves.

The church has held us back long enough. I DEMAND the right to miss UK Christmas telly and turkey with the folks.

Good Friday is not a bank holiday, it only provides a free day to publicans and their staff. The rest of us sober up, and realize how dull life is without alcohol and how boring it is to be productive and organized. IMO it is a conspiracy by the Alcohol companies to make is drink more over the rest of the year. How many people get from Jan 1 to Good Friday as sober people only to be reminded life is too short?

I think also the 3 religous days you have mentioned are the only religious days that are bank holidays.

Maybe Halloween, but its never on the 31st

I don't want to be repressed and told by some fairy in the sky that I can't drink on good Friday.

    No problem Bro.

Now get up outta that bed and get to work, don't let that fairy tell you to stay in bed and still get paid.

Wouldn't bother me. I have worked on Paddy's Day before and will be this year as well. I've also worked Good Friday in the past, again didn't bother me, and I did not get extra pay either. The only days I have not worked are Christmas Day and Stephens Day.

This became my new favourite thread when I took it without the context of time.

So, AH, will you be eating meat three days ago?

I think non religious family's kids should be unrestricted in Catholic schools.

Yeah Well I'm f*cking drinking on good friday!

    I love it! :D:D:D

Most people work Good Friday, its not even a public holiday.

Your entitle to a Day in Lieu or some other compensation for any Bank Holiday worked.

I don't work on Good Friday, majority of offices are closed, so it's not a normal day.

Off the top of my head 4 of the bank holiday's are religious Days.

It's amazing how this thread went from eating meat on Ash Wednesday to this.

Well considering the influence they have over people in this country who, quite frankly, would love nothing more than to have absolutely nothing to do with them, is it that much of a surprise?

It's par for the course really when the most heated posters are the counter-cultural nihilist self-appointed intellectual superiors who demand that the country completely divest itself of any religious aspect. This type of thing is just a manifestation of the constant changing of subject: a rolling derailment of thread topics to disguise the intolerance of their blinkered and inhuman view of human culture.

I'm surprised you managed to post that, considering the influence the church over the media in this country. They're everywhere.....watching....and waiting....

Not really, quite a lot of people don't adhere to the practices of catholicism in Ireland at this stage and don't appreciate those practices being imposed on them. If you want to abstain on certain days feel free to do so but don't force me to do the same thank you very much.

Personally, I think there's a lot to be said for people who think like this to be forcibly baptised.

    This.

The suggestion to remove the public holiday from Christmas day to be replaced by nothingness is a neat, if funny, summary of the type of inhumane silliness promoted by church and culture haters.

The vast majority of them have been baptised. I don't judge them, they were young and foolish at the time.

Why on earth would somebody think this way?

Listen you do have a right to practice religion whatever way you see fit provided that that practice does not compel others to act as you see fit.

Although seeing as the average age of baptism is circa 6 months one could argue that they've already been forcibly baptised.

So much hatred for people that don't believe in religion. What are your views on non-religious people saying people have the right to practice their religion as long as they don't force their beliefs onto others?
