Do I use Leap card when switching from train to DART?

    Hi folks,
I'm going to be going from Clonsilla to Blackrock. This will involve getting the train from Clonsilla and changing at either Connolly or Pearce stations (Depending on the time) and then getting a DART to Blackrock. I will be using my Leap Card.

My question is: Obviously I swipe on at Clonsilla and off at Blackrock but do I swipe off at Connelly/Pearce getting off the commuter train and swipe on again getting on the DART or do I just swipe on at Clonsilla and off at Blackrock?

    Cheers folks

    Hi there,

All you have to do is tag on in Clonsilla and off in Blackrock.

You only tag off at Connolly / Tara St. / Pearse if you want to leave the station.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks bikeman1.
that helps. Wasn't sure if there was a tap on/off pole on the platforms themselves too. Cheers

For the railway anoraks amongst us, there is provision on platforms in certain stations in London to do what you're suggesting when changing trains. Last year for example I went from Earl's Court tube station to Hampton Court which is at the end of a branch off the mainline network. I could have taken the tube to Waterloo and then a mainline train to Hampton Court but that would have involved travelling into Zone 1 which would have increased the cost of the journey. Instead I took the District Line tube south to Wimbledon where I switched from the tube to the mainline train coming from Waterloo. To prove that I did not go into Zone 1, there is a special Oyster reader on the platform where I swiped the card.

They're officially called pink card readers though I distinctly remember that it was not coloured pink but it was on the platform and intended for through passengers. They're installed in all of the stations outside Zone 1 where passengers can change between the tube and the mainline networks.

There is actually a validator on Platform 5 at Connolly for people arriving on intercity trains, much like the London case described.

You sure? where abouts? It doesnt make sense as you still would need to tag off to open the barriers in the main station.

He means people getting off an Intercity train and boarding the DART or commuter train to travel onwards within the Short Hop Zone, or vice versa.

They can tag on at the pole and then tag off at whatever station their journey concludes at. Saves people the walk to the barriers to tag on or off as applicable.

How many would actually use a leap card for it instead of buying a ticket from their boarding station to their destination?
Would you buy a ticket from Sligo to Connolly and then use a leap card to Sydney Parade ? or would you just buy a ticket from Sligo to Sydney Parade?
If you got on the Rosslare train at Bray or the Sligo at Maynooth then you would just tag on at them stations inbound.

Well people could have bought cheaper online tickets for the Intercity journey and then use leap for the connecting DART/Commuter run.

I don't see the issue with providing the facility? Better to be pro-active than not.

    It's a positive step.

I'm guessing this is also future proofing for when Leap develops and offers 1 journey on different modes of transport - e.g. starting your trip on DART and finishing on bus or tram etc.
