Went to Mass in Belfast City Centre today and it was probably the biggest crowd I have seen at Mass in my time going there over the last twenty-five years.

Cod, chips and onion rings tonight for tea - a most rewarding experience!! The chippy was packed - when I placed my order, the fella taking the order shouts over his shoulder, "How many fish left?" "Twenty-four" was the reply. Out of curiosity I asked how many they started the day with. 'Five hundred' was the answer.

    Think you meant fifty

Is it supposed to be some sort of penance to stuff yourself at the chippy? What a fcking joke

It is well known that Jesus stopped regularly at supermacs in the desert and even took St Patricks day off.

And apparently he swung by Connolly Station on Good Friday and so could have a quick drink en route to calvary.

I think it's your own choice whether you ate meat today or not. I'm just glad there's no stuffy DeValera type legislation about not being able to sell meat today.

IMO it very much is - in this country anyway.
I haven't read the entire thread but I haven't seen anyone outrightly say in all seriousness they REBELLING against the church by eating meat today. It's obviously all lighthearted.
There are numerous posts saying "I'm having steak and I'm gonna enjoy it; I won't let that crowd tell me what to do". It's teenage stuff and cringey coming from adults.
Yet, we have several posters on here replying in full seriousness to defend the church. Bizarrely hypocritically sneering themselves at people for what they see as 'sneering' (to quote, "childish", "pathetic excuse for oneupmanship", etc etc)
But they're getting defensive due to some pretty uncalled-for things being said.
    Is it?
Yes. I don't agree with the "It's After Hours" defence.

    This was my Ash Wednesday.
Went to mass , queued for Ashes with approx 150 others afterwards.
Said some prayers, thanked Jesus for all the blessings in my life.
Thought about all the pain and suffering in the world.
Didn't eat very much really, so many are starving and we really make pigs of ourselves every day.
I didn't tell anyone else what they should do. I really don't expect anyone else to tell me.
Nothing I did yesterday impacted negatively on anybody else.
Sneer at me if you like. I could honestly say it really doesn't bother me.
But why don't you just get on with doi g your thing and just let me do mine?

I have no religious beliefs, but I respect yours and your attitude. There's no need for any of us to sneer at another's choices. :)

Yep, it's an arbitrary rule thought up by the catholic church. If you wanna stick to what the bible says, then I hope your child never disobeys you cause unfortunately, that's a stoning to death offence

Threads like this one (which several are complaining about being childish etc) result directly from the type of behaviour and attitudes described above. Is it not enough that Catholics avoid meat on whatever days their religion/bible/priest tell them? Why do the management of Dunnes or the local chipper impose it upon their customers? Do they only have/want Catholic customers? Can Catholics not make choices from the range of regular meat free salads, without having the ones that contain meat removed for their comfort?

It's the same reason why Bars are shut on good friday. Why Condoms were banned, why the state censored so many books and films etc. Catholics can't be trusted to follow the rules on their own, so the church imposes it's will on them.

It's also the same reason why the church are so insistent on keeping religious education as part of the school curriculum. They know that parents won't teach their kids the faith on their own, so they force it on them through the school system.

A load of mass goers had their foreheads chemically burned by the ash wednesday ritual yesterday in Cork

Nobody thought it was a miracle or a sign from god, they quickly washed off the ash and it is now being sent for analysis at a Lab to find out what was causing the pain

Religious beliefs are ridiculous to you. Not to those who have them. What gives you the right to tell ssomebody they're wrong?

Bit pointless anyway, because telling somebody who believes in god or any other deity that they're wrong, or ridiculing them, isn't going to change what they believe in.

People are free to believe in what/who they want. I don't believe in God, but I sure as hell wouldn't ridicule my friends and family who do. I think one of the rules on boards sums it up pretty well - don't be a dick. :)

If you have any ridiculous viewpoints on the economy, politics, sport or religion don't feel that you are exempt from being called up on your views.

Feel free to defend your views if you can!!!

    Again, how about respecting people?

I don't agree with my mother's opinions on the economy, politics or religion, but I respect my mother, aand she respects me, so I refrain from acting like a dick.

Basic respect isn't too difficult. You can disagree with a belief or opinion without ridiculing somebody.

Obviously people shouldn't ridicule believers. You shouldn't go around saying
    "You're stupid for believing this"
However, when someone believes something stupid, we shouldn't be expected to tip toe around and show respect for that belief.

It's all in the delivery. Father ted did an excellent job at showing how ridiculous a lot of catholic traditions are without ridiculing the believers

South Park did an excellent job at showing how ridiculous Mormanism is but they attacked the beliefs, not the believers.

A lot of religious people are extremely over sensitive about any criticism of their faith. This alludes to a deeper insecurity which is itself a feature of belief.

Deep down most religious believers have serious serious doubts about their faith, and it's talked about openly in church about how people have to work hard to constantly reaffirm their beliefs and suppress doubt. The implicit consequences are that if you lose your faith, you will will either a) go to hell, or b) miss out on the rewards in heaven

I have been at enough masses to know that a lot of the gospels talk about the consequences of losing your faith using metaphors like grapes falling to the ground and rotting away and chaff being seperated from the wheat etc..

If I feel if your viewpoint on economics/religion could hurt others I will provide a reasoned argument as to why your opinion is incorrect. Remember you have a vote, you can change things so if you are ignorant about the true effects of your viewpoint it should be pointed out to you.

The whole thing is so utterly ridiculous.

It makes no sense, and is one of the prime examples of sheer... unintelligence and sheep mindset of religion.

Most of the time I successfully ignore it but sometimes you can't help but feel a little more enlightened.

The same way you would if you were talking to an adult who 100% believed in santa claus, this is how I feel often as a non religious person.

When someone says, I'm not going to eat meat on this day but is unable to give any rational, logical or intelligent reason for it bar "my religion tells me to do it" but then goes off an eats ****ing FISH on that same ****ing day.

FISH IS MEAT YOU UTTER UTTER.... Ree.....bizarre people....

What bugs me more is that everyone that follows this bizarre religious rule will still randomly break loads of other rules. These people are not going to mass every sunday or waiting till they are married to have sex and are using condoms.

Its all so feckin preposterous

    Really? Reeeealy?

Yes, Reeeeealy? I'm not a Jew but I would think anyone who came on to say 'woo hoo, look at me Rabbi.I'm eating pork' was a total knob. The same with people who think they're taking some kind of brave stand by having shepherd's pie on Ash Wednesday. No problem with people querying others beliefs in a courteous way, or stating that they no longer practice their religion. But people being sneery and dismissive; or acting as if they're on a par with Aung San Suu Kyi because they ate ham for lunch, and are bravely standing up against oppression, sound ridiculous and childish, regardless of what religion you are.

There are a lot of extremely ridiculous things that Jewish people do to try to conform to what their religion tells them to do. (example here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruv)

Not eating pork does not stand out as particularly ridiculous, But the restrictions on how other animals have to be killed in order that they are Kosher does have a pretty horrible impact on animal welfare.

It is ridiculous that animals have to suffer needlessly because one group of people thinks that their god has commanded them to not touch the blood of any animal

    Wrong.

Ridicule the beliefs by all means.

But ridiculing the person for their beliefs is just bullying.

Regardless of how idiotic and superstitious those beliefs may be.

People have the right to behave like sheep if they want but they shouldn't be targeted for that.

    HA!

If it was somehow possible to sit down every single person who followed this religious rule in Ireland. Do you really think it would be hard to catch them out of skipping or ignoring a whole rake of other religious rules?

I'm amused that out of all the things in my post, this is the point you have a problem with and try to argue against.

    I mean... come on now.

It jumped out because it was such a ridiculous statement.

Talk about making assumptions. If you had said 'some of those that follow this religious rule....'. But of course that would have been a balanced and justifiable statement!
