I can't agree with 90% of this thread, I love watching golf for the golf and I think there are enough of the main contenders there week in/ week out to keep the personal side interesting.

Any tournament where no big name is going to be in contention come Sunday, just requires a couple of € bet to keep the interest:)

Seems to me that golf stars nowadays are damned if they do have personalities and slightly less damned if they don't.
Anyone that acts outside of the norm is chastised within an inch of their life.
For instance Rory walking off the course last year. Yes, it was a bit childish and he probably should have finished the round and took it on the chin, however, when you have grown up believing you will be the best golfer in the world, you finally get there, then get the multi-million sponsor dream you always wanted, you suddenly are having the round from hell playing like one of us hackers. I can imagine you would rather not go through this on live television and would prefer going home where you can wrap your driver around a tree in the back garden without being seen.:)
Also, when Sergio had an argument with Tiger about putting him off his shot, he made an off the cuff comment that was meant to be funny but unfortunately came out as slightly racist:o, he was harassed by media for weeks later. Did he apologise to Tiger, Did he shake his hand. Did he write him a letter.

I know the Tiger affair(s) was a bigger deal than the above episodes but in fairness, with the amount of coverage and hassle he got because of it, you would swear he had murdered 15 women rather than having slept with them.

It's little wonder they spew out the same post round comments week in week out when anything slightly provocative will be twisted into mega-news. After all, they want an easy life as much as the rest of us ( with the added perks of playing golf around the world earning millions )

I agree wholeheartedly. There was a thread on here when Darren Clarke won the Open Championship, in which he was roundly dismissed as a man who had wasted his talent. A man who had won over 20 tour events, played in 5 Ryder Cup teams, and won the most sought after prize in Europe, if not the world. Probably in the top 0.5% of professional golfers in history on stats.

Yet because he enjoys spending his money on cars, cigars, booze and blondes, and can be equal parts rude and charming, people want to stick the boot in.

But - thewobbler - I don't think you'll find too many, who don't believe Darren could have won 4 or 5 Open Championships.

We are fans of the sport - without us, the lads would not have the money they have. We can give opinions - the problem nowadays is that people think their opinions count. Thy don't. But we can still talk about the sports we love to our friends etc. That is the lifeblood of a successful sport. They want us talking about it - it adds to their value.

He is a character , I like him - sure I won 800 euro on that bet ;)
But there is no way I'm going to agree that Darren should have the same number of Opens as Ben Curtis and Stewart Cink -

Ronnie O'Sullivan was wild - but won his Worlds - Plenty of footballers were wild and won all around them
But, some do end their career unfulfilled.

    Maybe another days Debate.

It's still one more than Garcia, Montgomerie, Westwood and Donald.

He also peaked in tandem with Tiger Woods.

We all have differing standards in this world, but I always find it difficult to comprehend how a consistently brilliant golfer for a decade could be seen as an underachiever.

The next person who posts something about another poster gets a ban.
If you cant refute their argument without resorting to name calling then you dont belong here.

    No more warnings.
