Fuel economy ! Alfa 159 1.8

    Iv recently been driving a 2007 1.8 petrol Alfa 159. I previously had a 1.8 mazda 323 and that loved petrol !. The Alfa seems to be very very poor . Now I accept it's mainly city driving but iv been averaging just 90km for about 13.3litres of petrol.

    This seems extraordinary high to me. The car was serviced etc last Sept and had only put 4000km on the clock since. Could there be something wrong ? Is there anything I can do to improve it?. Thanks

    Doesn't seem to far off the mark for a heavy car in city driving. The Alfa is close to 50% heavier than the Mazda.

    You also need to factor in that the 1.8 is just not enough for such a heavy car.
    I believe the 1,8 drinks just as much as the 2.2 JTS.
    Take it on a long spin on a motorway and do a brim to brim tank and that will tell you exactly how much it is consuming.

    Yeah seems about right to be honest , the 159 is heavy car and the 1.8 engine is underpowered , it really isn't great on fuel. As said the 2.2 JTS is the actually the better of the two.

    It's the same story in the Alfa 156 ,, the 2 litre isn't much worst off than the 1.6 litre of fuel and in the 166 the 2.5 V6 isn't a lot of worst than the 2 litre TSpark as it's pulls the car along much smoother, the 2.0 is underpowered because of the power to weight ratio.

    It's something people overlook when choosing a car a lot of the time, lower tax bracket on the engine but smaller lumps can struggle.

    The Alfa is a good bit heavier but it isn't anywhere near 50% heavier. It's closer to 25% heavier.

    How are you measuring this? Because 13.3 litres of fuel is exactly €22ish of fuel at certain prices.... Sticking €20 into the tank and driving until the light comes on isn't going to be scientific. Brim the tank, drive X amount of miles and brim it again.

    In general though fuel economy from what is a woeful engine in a heavy car around town is always going to be poor :)

    The Alfa is a tonne and a half, the 323 would be a shade over a tonne.

    Mazda 323 = 1176kg
    Alfa 159 = 1430kg

    im not saying it's scientific but 13,3 litres of fuel at €1,50 is €20
