    Yeah the culpricks were caught

That is a good start anyway, pity though that it has to go through the Irish judicial system yet. I hope the arresting officers did not cuff them, but instead organised a ministerial car and driver to escort them to the nearest 5 star hotel for a meeting with Gardai.

Police spend £18million on unmarked cars

Police forces in the UK have spent £18million on unmarked police cars, with executive models including the likes of the Jaguar XF, Audi A6 and BMW X5 arriving on police fleets.

A Freedom of Information request by the Daily Mail found that the West Midlands force had spent the most on their cars with £4,493,889 used to buy high performance and luxury models over the past three years.

Lancashire police force came in second with a total of £2,027,986 on their unmarked cars, while Greater Manchester had splashed out £1,999,842 and Hampshire had spent £1,653,054

High performance vehicles used by office and admin staff

The vehicles weren’t just the used for high-speed pursuits, instead some of them were being used by office and admin staff for non-emergency situations.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Matthew Sinclair, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance said: “The police budget should be spent fighting crime, not on swanky motors for chief constables.

“Forces need performances cars for undercover work but that's not a reason to buy them for those spending their life behind a desk.

“Axing flash run-arounds for police chiefs is a simple way to save taxpayers' money while protecting front line policing.”

However, Andy Kelly, West Midlands Police’s Head of Fleet Services, explained: “When we buy vehicles we are required to follow Home Office vehicle acquisition frameworks, which are in place nationally.

“Vehicles are put forward for consideration then assessed on '"fitness for purpose" and cost effectiveness. Following this process, awards are then made to manufacturers."

I have noticed at least 4 unmarked Hyundai i 30's around Cork city in the last 2 weeks. I am beginning to wonder have they only been purchased for detective branch?

I am surprised to see that different constabularies have individual fleet budgets. Surely a central system for UK would provide economy of scale and save a fortune, also making sure that the correct vehicle's were being purchased.

I seen a 06 unmarked Bmw 523 today when it was chasing a stolen car through Ballyfermot. Didn't get a chance to take a pic of it.

It's all covered by the 'Home Office guidelines' ;)https://www.google.co.nz/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=&oq=home+office+police+vehicle&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADRA_enIE451IE451&q=home+office+approved+police+vehicles+&gs_l=hp..1.0i22i30l2.0.0.0.14390...........0.SrhX8FxFV68

The 'Home Office' - makes you think of chaps in trilbys and belted gabardines arriving in an old Wolseley http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dTENGHfT484/UnVVv7xOXYI/AAAAAAAALwM/1WHcnOIL7EU/s1600/680%2Bbob.jpg

Wonder what the Barrackmaster's 'guidelines' are :P

The "right job" in what way exactly

Not sure what it has to offer as a garda car that a decently specced Mondeo or Octavia couldn't offer.

    well that goes without saying

just commenting that that i40 tourer would be a nice addition to the fleet as opposed to an i30

Unlike the avensis the i40 has two cup holders. See it's better already.

Time will tell for sure if they will be a good addition to the fleet. I'm not convinced yet as they will be only a 1.7 sized engine. This is sized engine is not what we are used to at district hq's.

If the i40s are tourers then they will probably be slower than the i30

The Avensis does have two. The second is in the central arm rest.

The 2005 Subaru fozzy's that are always knocking around the airport are IMO the best looking unmarked vehicles in the country.

Pity they never got some of the 2.5XT's.

From an outsiders viewpoint - they (i40s) are the sort of vehicle youd expect someone in an office to spec.

Fine as a family car - but not so sure they would be a suitable car for emergency services use.

Well the i30 here, won't be used for an emergency but a resource car as its called.
