Kurt Cobain was a Leadbelly fan - famously covering 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' a 'MTV Unplugged'.

Effectively selling it back to them, the very music that was right under their noses :D

Then Led Zep did is again a couple of years later, albeit with a much heavier aporoach.

Dig the original When The Levee Breaks or Travelling Riverside Blues (to name but two).

What's excellent about these was that the cover versions and the originals were totally different, but (almost) equally brilliant.

Shocking script in that footage there.....

No wonder Lomax was embarrassed afterwards...

Jesus, a debate along these lines could go on for a while. Well, until you run out of Stones songs in about two more posts...:-D

(Ah, jesys, don't get dragged in, Donie!!)

Now, Robert Johnson. No doubt about it, he was just amazing. Love in vain was my favourite.

In fairness though, could Lennon/McCartney ever have written stuff like this?

They could probably make a decent fist of I Wanna Be Your Man! :-D:-D

(Your precious Stones first number 1!)

I must say, this is like a history lesson apart from listening to great artists....

I could watch footage like this all night.

More or less since BBC Four started - Friday night is music night!

Next week...it's all about Status Quo! :D:D:D

It's a bit fiddly, but I got High Fidelity to work on this page, eventually

This one first aired a few months ago, I think, but they have stuff like this on bbc4 most Fridays and Saturdays. They usually do a genre for the night or weekend.

Recently there have been some great ones about American Rock, early Rock n Roll and Neil Sedaka. :-D

The Beatles only got interesting towards the end. The Stones were interesting all of the the time. There's no way you'd have had Mick Jagger singing "She Loves You" or "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". Those songs were pure embarrassing shyte.

    Here's another couple: ;)

Yep, Friday and Saturday Nights are a treasure trove on BBC Four.

All sorts of music, but they are usually good quality.

Towards the end of their meagre seven years?!

    *deep breath*

Right, look, the stones are good. I'm leaving it there!

The Rolling Stones took their name from a Muddy Waters song.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

Tying up neatly with the last few posts, there was a show on here a while ago of Muddy Waters featuring The Stones.

    10/10 from me, that show.

Some nice Muddy Waters and Rolling Stones collaborations on Youtube

John Lee Hooker is sort of unique in that he didn't bother making his lyrics rhyme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,749 ✭✭✭✭grey_so_what

This is the maddest evening of music for me.

FYI, I was in the NCH listening to the NSO.......:)....

    "Hollywood Heroes"....

Themes to Superman, Rocky, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark etc...

    And now I'm on Harmonica!!.......

    YEEEEAAAA!....

Can anyone point me in the direction of any good books on Muddy Waters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

    Really, Grey?

Saw the ad for that, was it amazing? What did they play?

    Edit: mostly John Williams? Excellent.

    Love Howlin Wolf.

I was in Sun Studios - Shoebox is almost understating how small it is.

I stood on the same spot as Howlin Wolf, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins etc etc

    Loved it.
