Hows the family ?/ What are you doing now ? etc and then the SILENCE, Followed by...Theres my bus, have to rush etc and you both part ways mumbling Wnker under your breath and just glad to get away.
I hate that ! but its funny later :)
PS Its even worse when you spot them from a distance and just know they have spotted you !

I ignore them as they greet me and continue pushing forward even if they get up in my face. Become robot like, even.

I find dropping the hand smooths over the awkwardness.

Even years after he used to bully and torment me in school, the same guy still takes my lunch money today.

He makes a good sandwich though to be fair.

'God, it's grown since you were in school right enough'

'Ah those stretch techniques work wonders, sir'

I'm one of those ignorant people that pretends to have walked in the wrong direction and does a quick about turn and legs it the opposite direction or I walk straight by them looking directly ahead pretending I can't see them. I don't see why I have to put up with stupid, awkward conversations with people I don't want to talk to and I'm sure they feel the same.

Your eleven legs must come in handy in such a moment

Or an ex girlfriend stops you that you haven't seen in 20 years & starts chatting about the "old days" while all the time you're trying to remember her fckin name!

I am terrible at recognising people so simply walk around ignoring everyone.

Except when i go to my home town. There I put a stupid smile on and say hello to everyone for fear of offending someone I know but do not recognise.

It's about 30 seconds out of your day. Why not just be nice and converse with them?

They're probably Welsh in my case. Enough said.

Its hard to make small talk, i usually just go in whatever the nearest shop to avoid them rather than talk dung for 5 minutes.

Years ago, I was approached in the Big Tree by a lad I apparently went to school with. Didn't have a notion who he was, but was quit drunk and didn't want to be impolite. Its amazing how long you can keep a conversation going with generic questions,

    How's the family?,
Are you still friends with, oh whats his name? (wait until they mention random name), and say 'Thats the one'

20 minutes of asking these questions, and I eventually figured it out. IN fairness though, the guy had lost a lot of hair in the meantime

I'd usually just blank them, I went to school with a bunch of muppets.

That said, I remember being out in Dub one night about 6 years ago and running into a guy who made my life hell in school; he came up with a bunch of lads, put his arm around me and went 'FW long time no see!!' as if we were best buds. I just looked at him blankly and responded 'sorry, what's your name again?'.

Funny thing is, I genuinely couldn't remember his name - but the burn was still classic :D

If you don't like someone, why would you talk to them?

It's this 'polite' idle chit chat thing I really don't get.

The worst is when you're sitting on the train or bus and someone like that gets on and sits beside you to talk.

I think it shouldn't be considered rude to say something like "look, I think your an ok person and all, but we just don't have 45 minutes worth of things to talk about."

I hate smalltalk and I'd imagine i come off as a right prick sometimes in trying to avoid it.

That happens me sometimes with work colleagues. It's so fcuking annoying, it's like 'work's over man, get out of my face'. Happened again today but luckily he didn't seem to want to be stuck with me either, so I let him walk on ahead and I got in a different carriage.

I think a lot of the time it's just them trying to be polite too; it's an awkward situation all round.
