    Hi,

Was just wondering if any AGS members or retired AGS could enlighten me on the medical process for the AGS, more interested in the hearing and sight aspect, as in procedure for them both.

    Thanks
    Billie

A quick question, say now if you were accepted for training in templemore, and mid way throught the training you broke a bone? Had to go for an operation how would this affect the training course? Would you have to resign ?

You would be reverted and restart whatever phase you were on with a different intake once you're passed fit.

There's a thread for this with lots of info but pretty much....you get a call from someone in the depot to see can you come on a day and at a time. Once you confirm thats it...off you go on the day.
Up to the depot and round to medical building. In the door and take a seat, then someone comes out to give you a form that you need to fill in. Name blah blah. Also asks your medical history and if you have tatoos and have you ever been in hospital for x rays and stuff.
Then after a wait you'll be called into a room where there's a sound proof hub I guess you could call it. Your told to press the button on a gismo that you hold when you hear a sound.
So in you go...door closed. The only sound you can hear is boom boom boom boom... thats your heart beating ! No joke haha.
So you hear a few things in your ears then your left then your right then your left and so on...
out you pop and the lady will tell you its ok.
Back to your seat for another wait.......tick tock.......then you'll be called back to another room for blood pressure..oh and dont forget the wee in a cup ;)
Back to your seat for another few mins then you'll be called to anither room for lung capacity. All you do there is blow in a tube that resembles a hoover tube ! Guess what....back to your seat.

    Then up you go upstairs.
The doctor awaits you ! Oh and you've to take off your clothes and put on fabulous robes. Where's the slippers ??
So into the doctor. Blood pressure again, or maybe that was just me cause my bp is low normally but it was v.high that day. Then your asked to touch your toes and to hop up onto the bed. Get your boobies checked (if your a girl of course). Then....what else.....oh yea.. eye test. Theres a machine in the corner. You sit at that and you place your eyes and forehead onto it. I guess it would feel like a swimming mask thingy. Then it's like looking into a kleidaskope. There are numbers at the bottom. Its not all that difficult to be honest. Oh yea...your weighed up there too if I remember correctly.

Then you're told if you pass.
I think thats pretty much it to be honest.

if ive forgotten anything someone add it in there :)

Then you head over to the other end of the building to get a date for your pct and thats you :)

sorry for all that. I tried to fit in as much to help :)

    I would think so

Whoops.. knew id forget something. Yep..they take a look in your mouth.
It wouldn't do any harm to get a check up. Specially if you are questioning if you'd pass. If I went in kinda worrying about something that I could fix but didn't and I didn't pass...id be really annoyed at myself. Specially after passing the tests and interview. To have to go back to the beginning again cause I didn't do something...dya know ?

I know I'll be taking a trip to the dentist in the next few weeks. Even if I dont pass the apt test at least my teeth will be nice :)
ive already got my eyes done.

Its my last try due to age, i'd be proud if I even made it to the medical to be honest. I've lost weight too, was 93kg, down to 89kg now and still dropping, aiming for between 83-85kg but want to lose it slowly and keep it off instead of quickly and piling back on

I'm nervous about the medical. I need to lose weight before it. Does anyone know when the medicals will take place? I know that I have to get through all the other stages first, but I'm planning for it anyway. I've lost over a stone already, but I need to lose a few more. The oul BMI is still shocking high. The ironic thing is that I'm fit, in that I exercise for several hours a day and love it. But the weight is going to be a problem, so off it must come!
Also, I'm on prescription medication for a few conditions, asthma and underactive thyroid and a couple of other things. Will this go against me? I'm nervous about it. Do they contact your GP and get your medical history? I was half thinking of not admitting to some of it?!?

That would be the worst thing you could do. If you fail to submit anything it shows dishonesty. Not to mention the health and safety implications. Submit everything. They are sure to find out anyway. You have to submit the last five years medical history, at least that is how it was in the past campaigns. Good luck with your application though.

What exactly are they looking for apart from caries, can you elaborate a bit more? What about chipped teeth?

They are just taking a look in to make sure everything is all ok with your mouth. No chipped teeth or damaged teeth.
I remember opening my mouth, doctor took a look in, had a look and that was all. I have grand teeth anyhow so not sure what would happen if your teeth were not so good.

I read bavk through the other medical thread. It's quite good. Lots of info on that

Will a chipped tooth really make a difference?

I'm on meds for anxiety and depression. I'm really worried about disclosing that at the medical (if I even get that far)
I honestly feel that these conditions wouldn't prevent me from working as a guard, or hinder me in any way on the job. It has never affected my work before. I've never been hospitalised but I do see a psychiatrist and counsellor on a regular basis. I'm sooooo tempted to keep this to myself! I feel they would take one look at this and throw my application in the bin. Is there any way of finding out in advance if these conditions are considered a bar to being recruited? I really hope they're not.
My personal opinion is that in learning to cope with these conditions, I have learnt some really helpful techniques for identifying and dealing with difficult emotional situations and how to deal with and decrease my stress levels. I think this would actually help me if I were a guard, as I imagine it to be a stressful job at times, and I'd say tensions can get very high at times.
However, this being Ireland, I suspect that most people, including the Gardaí, would see my medical history on a page and think, 'crazy bitch, steer clear!'.

The one thing AGS and it's members despise is dishonesty.

If you're lucky enough to get to the medical stage my advice would be to be open and honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭3fullback

How ever bad it would be not disclosing all info... It will be 100 times worse not disclosing and then the truth is found out.

You will have to sign a document allowing AGS to access to all your medical history !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Shifty13

If you are worried about anything to do with your health, go down to your GP and get checked out (that's what they are there for) the €60 you pay will be worth it when you're in Templemore!

Then down to your Dentist for an check up and off to the optician. maybe €120 total but at least you know where you stand and you will have no surprises or disappointment on the day.

This is exactly what i'll be doing if i get to the interview stage.

about the eye test. you have to have a perfect vision? people who wear glasses shouldn't apply in a first place? or I am reading too much into this?

The standard required is 6/18, 6/18, correctable to 6/9, 6/12.

    On the subject of tattoos.

I have a small one on my hip that remains completely unseen, unless I am in a bikini etc. I was also thinking of getting another small tattoo on the other side of my hip, which will also remain unseen.

However, if this is going to cause me any problems, I wont be getting the second tattoo.

The job I am in at present, involves wearing a uniform also, and the rule states that whilst they are not preferred, once they are not visible, you are roughly ok.

    Do the same rules apply?
