Dire Straits were never seen as 'cool' by the media...always associated with 'yuppies' and 'corporate rock'.

Can't beat the riff for 'Money For Nothing'...epic!

    Who was on the panel?

There were three different shows (70s 80s and 90s)

Mainly journalists, although he had Peter Hook and Louise Wener! and er ... Lloyd Grossman - who he introduced as "The Pete Best of Masterchef" :D

I head a story that Dave Fanning had an exclusive interview with the Dire Straits guitar player once ... even though they were in America at the time.

Some chancer walked up to RTE and Fanning put him straight on air.

Edit: here it is, it wasn't RTE

The Greatest of all nites on the ocean wave, however, must be the legendary incident of Dave Fanning and the dummy Dire Strait.

Dave had been relentlessly plugging Dire Straits' first album on Big D, so when he was introduced to someone claiming to be the Straits' bass-player, John Ilsley, in town on a visit, he naturally asked him to come on down. An interview ensued with the alleged Mr. Ilsley, in which he waxed lyrically and convincingly about the band, and thanked Dave for all his help. The euphoria lasted until it was pointed out a little later that Dire Straits were apparently on tour in some far distant land, and unless John Ilsley had mastered the art of bilocation, Dave had been given a bum steer. Why anyone would dream up such a hoax we'll never know, other than it seemed like fun.

There are some clubs in Swansea where...whoops, said too much! :D

Remember at the time how awesome we all thought the 'Money For Nothing' video was, and that computer animation would never get better than that? :D

And you all know the story about the fake interview Dave Fanning had with John Isley when he worked for The Big D???

    Snap Skid!!!!!! :)

No Skid, it wasn't a chancer, it was well advertised in the Hot Press and it was on Pirate Radio....Despite the fact JI's picture was on the back of the album and he didn't even have a beard nor look like him!....

    hehehe....Snap again Skid xxx

ARE YOU TIRED OF PLAYING "ACE OF SPADES"?

Lemmy: Wouldn't you be? 14 years. I sang "Eight of Spades" for five years and nobody noticed. That will show you how much attention people pay to the bloody vocals.

I think Brothers In Arms was responsible for that. Their earlier albums were much better..... (I know that sounds wankerish :o;) )

    I love this one too:
