Eggs: Where do we get them and do we need them?

We do need them, that last part was a joke, but the first part is very serious and a subject I'd like to delve into.

Where do we get eggs from? I've always wondered this but never been brave enough to ask anybody in person, but this is the internet and I don't care what you people think of me so I have mustered the courage to ask it. So, where do we actually get eggs from?

Chickens? This makes sense to me, but then how come the type of eggs we buy don't hatch into chickens? Would they if they were left with the mother? I'm blowing my own mind.

Have any of you actually thought "what am I putting into my mouth here?" upon eating an egg? It's different with most other types of food, because we know we're eating pigs and cows for example, but what are we eating when we eat an egg?

I know you lot are quite suspicious of threads like this, but I can assure you that I am not trolling, or on a wind-up. However, you'll only think this if the answer is obvious, but I don't actually think it is.

Look up the definitions for fertilised and unfertilised.

Be prepared to have your mind blown. Trippy stuff altogether.

"Where do we get them?" - chickens
"Why do we need them?" - because tasty protein
"how come the type of eggs we buy don't hatch into chickens?" - the egg isn't fertile.
"what are we eating when we eat an egg?" - eggs

But how did the first chicken come into being if it needed to come out of another chicken's arse?

Its chicken period I suppose. The egg farmers probably dont sell it like that though.

Will an egg turn into a chicken if it stays with the hen? Yes, if fertilised by the hen having sex with a cock.
what you're eating is an unfertilised egg. Very very basically the hen 'lays' an egg every day, same as all females do (at different time intervals). For example a human female does this once a month, give or take. Except that's comparing a bird to a mammal.

As rik mayall answered in guest house paradiso- "where do your eggs come from? " "em, hens vaginas."

This wasn't life or death, but I appreciate the information.

I think if you went out on Grafton Street asking people where eggs come from, you'll find quite a lot of people who don't actually know a proper answer. It's not common knowledge.

About 2 minutes in, if you really want to blow your mind.

Which came first? The chicken or the egg stupid question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭TheShizz

Stupid because you know the answer. There's a million and one questions which I could answer but would foil you. Not bragging because same applies to everyone. Different people know different things for a variety of reasons. I must have been sick the day that my class was taught about chicken periods.

If your brekkie goes "bock bock", probably best not to dip your sausage in it ;)

Debunked propaganda from the cereal companies who make huge profits by selling us cheap crap for breakfast.

Laying hens are kept separately from the rooster, takes the guesswork out of it.

We mostly get them from our own chickens in the back yard. We keep four , they have a fenced area to keep me fox away.
