I would agree that it can be quite elitist in that most of the schools/clubs which cater for rugby can be private/expensive.
I went to a S. Dublin rugby school, and there was a very very strong emphasis placed on the sport there (arguably more so than academics).

However, rugby is a great game, and one which we (Ireland) can actually compete at the highest level on the world stage.
It's a skilled game, and Ireland's rugby achievements have 100% been down to great dedication, strength, and determination to succeed.

So why shouldn't we celebrate that!!? Massive chip on the OP's shoulder. :P

Even more money is made from (association) football - I don't think that's a predominantly middle-class sport.

Football gets its supporters from both classes.

Maybe not in Dublin, but in Limerick. And to a degree in Cork.

Definitely not in Dublin. It's a middle class sport. Is this a news flash or something or are Irish people still weary of mentioning 'class'.

OP, I asked this question a few years ago...

I'll never get my head around it. To me, rugby is just boring. And, with certain people, if you don't profess to be really excited by 'the game', there's something wrong with you.

Rugby sucks b*lls as far as I'm concerned!

    Yet, the facts are:

Ireland are ranked 6th in the world. Recently up from 7th. There are really only 10 decent rugby teams in the world as such. (Any rugger bugger would tell you that)

Irelands so called Golden generation have won ONE 6 nations Championship in 30 years!

    Golden Generation?

Yet Jonny, Jamie and all the goys are world class, outstanding, brave, phenomenal, fantastic performance etc.

The six nations isn't the only win on offer. The Irish team have won four triple crowns (beating England, Scotland and Wales in the same Six Nations) since 2000. We've an incredibly good shot at beating England in ten days time and winning another one.

At domestic level three of our four provincial teams have either won or come close to winning international tournaments like the Heineken Cup or Pro12. There's a few more than ten decent teams there in Europe alone.

I'd be of a quite republican inclination but any debate about playing "imported" sports needs to be fecked into the nearest ditch. If we're good at it (and we're arguably better at it than the English who bloody well invented it) then why the hell not?

The Triple Crown is a load of ****.

Italy and France cant win the Triple Crown.

Winning the triple Crown is like saying well done to a team who just are 2nd best to the French.

No its not. Every class of people play at every club and most of them are Catholics too:eek:

In this case stupidy is only exceeded by ignorance

It was, but those days are fading fast in the face of commercial realities
Its all about talent now, look at sean o brien a farmers son from tullow one of leinsters top players
My local club is full of young lads and lasses playing now from every walk of life and not one f@#k do they give about what class they are from

It's quite working-class in Munster, in Limerick especially. In Dublin it does seem to be predominantly middle-class. There's exceptions, obviously.

    Definitely yes in Dublin.

The triple crown comes from the fact that the tournament usedto be called the home nations (terribly west brit name, but let's forget that).

    It's a competition within a competition, but:

    It''s still a competition.

I didn't know Irish people (being an Irish person myself) were ever wary of mentioning class.
Yeh rugby is predominantly middle-class but you initially asked "Really? Working class people play rugby?" The answer is yes.

    Its out of date.

Its like giving a trophy to Aston Villa cause they beat Notts County as they were one of the first teams in the English league. People would laugh at it.

It is out of date and just a excuse to make teams look good. Its not a trophy and should never come into the equation when talking of success.

That may be true, but the idea that you get defensive about the reality that rugby is primarily played by and watched by middle class people is profoundly annoying.

Your information is out of date. It is a physical trophy event.

Take the chip off your shoulder, deep fry it and eat it. There's worse things to get wound up about. :)

Its profoundly annoying that you are making **** up.

Go around the clubs and meet people and see how many are 'middle' class.

You will find a range of people from all walks of life like you would in any sports club.

You're the person who is happy to win a trophy by possibly coming 4th in a 6 nation tournament.

    Thats embarrassing.

So your annoyed that your presumptions are challenged well you will go far with that attitude
The reality is its watched by every "class " of people
As witnessed by its huge increase in popularity unless of course their is a corresponding increase in the middle classes in the last five years

Go into a working class pub when Ireland are playing rugby.

If it's the notion of generalising that you're annoyed about, then I take it back. Some working class people play and watch rugby.

I don't see how winning it would be any different if it was 1st in a 4 nation tournament? :D

You still have to beat the three other teams!

I'm not the biggest die-hard fan or anything, although the sport is growing on me fast. I just enjoy it more than soccer because there's less pansies involved.

What the **** has that got to do with anything anyway? Maybe if you could get over your ignorant prejudices you could enjoy what is really a great sport in which Irish teams packed with Irish players are competitive at international level and could even be described as dominant at club level.

As for the whole "English/Protestant sport" nonsense, where does soccer originate from? Oh yeah.

In any case the reason the private schools even played rugby in the first place had nothing to do with being "West Brits", it was because they were all run by Catholic orders (Holy Ghosts, Jesuits etc.) who wanted to beat the "Prods" at their own games. Not that that should have anything to do with the perception of rugby in the first place.

Its a lot more than you think especially outside of dublin and is really opened up in the last ten years
Yes their is a stereotype of the old school tie
But thats all it is a stereotype
Same as all soccer fans are lager drinkin hooligans
Or all gaa fans are thick ignorant boggers
Why not go to a few regional club games and see whos represented
