I don't see why people get so worked up about stories like this.

It's not like parents are forcing her to identify as a girl or even start hormone treatment, they're just allowing the child to pursue their own inclinations.

So what? It doesn't affect other people.
What's wrong with Mens toilets and Womens toilets, I sure as hell don't want to hear a woman having a crap beside me, is nothing sacred.

    Why not?
They do it the same way we do you know.

Should we not let gay people into our changing rooms in the gym in case they eye us up?
lol, I love when some men are so full of themselves they think they'll get eyed up all the time by gay men. I use the changing room every day at my local pool and trust me, even if I was looking, there's not much to see.

    Why are unisex toilets "daft"?

I know you weren't replying to me, but anyway; I don't think there's anything wrong with unisex loos, but I don't think that they'd be a good idea with teenagers. Giving hormonal youngsters legitimate access to a room with private cubicles could lead to all sorts of shenanigans, youngfellas trying to spy on girls and such. I'm sure that probably happens in mixed schools anyway, but at least with seperate toilets there's more chance for a teacher to spot, say, a girl going into the boys'.

Women fart rainbows and pot pourri anyway.

Seriously are you saying you would refuse to use a unisex?

I've used them, I was in one a couple of weeks ago but all the people in there seem to know what is what, there would be blood if a male dressed and thinking like a woman was caught in with young girls.
There was a discussion something similar in the sauna room about lads walking around with their lads out in front of children and it wasn't pretty.

Oh ffs. The only thing wrong in taking a sauna is poisoning everyone by wearing chlorine soaked togs.

You would be booted out of any mainland European countries saunas for wearing togs.

The correct reponse is that a modicum of respect is required for all sexes, genders and sexual identities to exist in peaceful harmony, that modicum of respect should include not checking out each others balls in a public changing rooms. It's not really about whether it's worth looking at or not.

It's no more correct for you to be checking out ugly mens equipment than it is good looking ones. Sexuality isn't a free pass for oogling. No more would I expect to be acceptable for me to leering at t1ts in a shared male - female changing room or where a mother is breastfeeding.

I'd hope I'd be adult enough to understand the context of the nudity and understand that leering or "just looking" is appropriate or not.

I'm comfortable sharing intimate space with whoever and I am really not interested in what dangles off their body and where it dangles from, but i expect we all behave respectfully when doing so.

Not just men! I know plenty of women who think like this too.

I'm straight and female, and frankly couldn't give a flying fcuk who eyes me up, whatever gender or sexuality. It's flattering being eyed up, even by the same gender.

Plus, being gay doesn't automatically mean you fancy everyone of the same sex. I don't go around eyeing up every man I see. Why would that change if I identified as gay?

Walking around swinging your dick in front of children is not tolerated, there has been slaps over it.
Nobody uses the sauna in public naked, i've been using them for years and not once has someone being naked. This is not sweden, it's not tolerated here.

Some school officials even think that, here's a shocker for you: Mississippi school forced 'pathetic dyke' to use the boys bathroom.

I have no problem with people being transgender, and I know that a lot of transgender people have identified as the opposite sex from a very young age. I also know that a lot of the time their parents ignored it or forced them to wear the clothes/ use the toys of their physical gender.

However, I really think that at 18 months or six years of age that you cannot fully know, or even if you think you know that you are transgender as a child, that this could change over time.

We don't allow children to make decisions about important things in their lives because they are children, and I think this should be the same. I just think that you shouldn't decide that your child is transgender and make life altering decisions, when the consequences of reversing that decision could be traumatic when the child is older.

Define 'swinging' and 'in front of'

At the risk of getting criticised for appearing "superior", that really is doing it wrong.

Chlorinated water from the pool may vaporise at the high temperatures of the sauna. As swimwear dries it releases that chlorine into the air of the sauna, and you are breathing that. Chlorine gas is highly toxic and can cause breathing problems for people with asthma for example.

Have you considered asking your sauna operator to move to using towels?

How would any school deal with this situation???

The parents of a six-year-old transgender child, who was born as a boy but raised as a girl, have filed a complaint against a US school after the first-grader was banned from using the girls' bathroom.
Coy Mathis, 6, was born a male but has presented as a female since she was 18-months-old, her mother Kathryn Mathis told talk show host Katie Couric.
The six-year-old was recognised as a girl by her school mates and was able to use the female bathroom until last December when officials at Eagle Elementary School in Fountain, Colorado told her she would have to use the boys' toilet or the nurse's.
Eagle Elementary' s lawyers said they had taken all the school's students into account when making the decision.
"The district's decision took into account not only Coy but other students in the building, their parents, and the future impact a boy with male genitals using a girls' bathroom would have as Coy grew older," they said in a letter.
Ms Mathis has home-schooled her child since but said she wanted her to have "the same educational opportunities as every other Colorado student".
"Her school should not be singling her out for mistreatment just because she is transgender," she said.
Ms Mathis has filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division on her daughter's behalf claiming the school has violated Coy's rights.
"We want Coy to return to school to be with her teachers, her friends, and her siblings, but we are afraid to send her back until we know that the school is going to treat her fairly. She is still just 6 years old, and we do not want one of our daughter's earliest experiences to be our community telling her she's not good enough," she said.

Except that we know a hell of a lot more about transgender issues today than we did a while back, and people aren't exactly flying blind here. Here's a really good talk on the subject by Dr. Norman Spack, a pediatric endocrinologist:

I kind of feel bad for the school there, I'd imagine that they were trying to come up with a compromise; 'She doesn't want to use the boys' bathroom, there could be complaints about "him" using the girl's bathroom. If we let her use the staff toilets everyone's happy'.

The obvious solution would seem to be unisex bathrooms, but with teenagers that could be asking for trouble.

Complaints aside, girls' toilets have stalls, so no one is going to see the child's penis and get all confused or bothered. I think teenagers and adults get much more bothered by all this than young children, to whom the whole world is full of new and challenging weirdness.

So the kids can see it,

    So what?

some guys walk around as if they just stepped out of the jungle in front or young and not so young children.

This is a male changing room, and the kids presumably have seen a penis before.

I'm missing what the issue is here. What do you think the problem is? Perhaps children should be forced to wear blindfolds?

In a sauna or changing room? Good. Kids won't grow up to be pervs if they've seen it all before.

OT - a friend's three-year old saw him getting dressed one morning, then announced to the entire creche that his Daddy has "THE BIGGEST PENIS IN THE WORLD!!!!" Daddy loves picking him up from the creche now.

Also, I really wonder do the people who are so set against the idea of unisex toilets have separate gendered bathrooms in their own homes?

Well most people don't have stalls in their homes either. Or urinals.

Why on earth is anyone even going down this sauna rabbit-hole with drunkmonkey? Kids shouldn't be in a sauna anyway, it can be bad for them, and most places don't allow children into saunas anyway.

Think the general line is that you must be over 16 or 18 to use a sauna in most places. Parents that drunkmoney describes are irresponsible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,501 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Nobody is in the sauna naked with children, the conversation about the swingers was in the sauna. The sauna was minding its own business until it became a health hazard due to chlorine in the togs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,818 ✭✭✭Lyaiera

I at least find some comfort in the fact that talking about chlorine in saunas is more controversial than talking about trans people.

Because I find it facinating that he thinks that giving someone slaps for being naked in a changing room with children in it is normal, whilst being naked in a changing room with children is not. Quite bizarre in 2014.

Kids shouldn't be in a sauna anyway, it can be bad for them, and most places don't allow children into saunas anyway.

Eh? Tell that to the Finns...that "saunas are not good for children" bull was made up by gyms to justify their policy so they could lower their insurance costs. Children should not stay in as long as they have less effective perspiration systems but there is nothing wrong with children taking a sauna.
