Because it is possible to present customised data on the internet but it isn't possible to do so with static physical signs. If physical signs could appear in English to me and Irish to someone who wants to see them in Irish I would be open to the idea. I imagine it would involve ocular implants and be cost prohibitive.

Or you could just get over the 'offence' of also seeing the other language on the sign.

Non-issue really.

I can understand both languages, so that isn't an issue. What becomes more of an issue is that the map is cluttered with two sets of names for every single lane and street, where it would be quite easy to display only half that information.

Always the same old anti irish argument . If you dislike it do much ignore it. I for one am happy to have it and like to see it stand as one of the primary languages in Ireland.. Why should it not be on our signage and maps ..... Having both shown really shouldn't have the affect as it does for some on this thread. Pathetic

Or we could just have a better user experience for everyone. Where I don't have to zoom or pan the map to see the street names. Granted people wouldn't be forced to see the Irish street names but that is a small price to pay.

Wrong.
There isn't two sets of names. Some streets have the english name. Some the irish. Some entire estates are in irish. Others english.

Zoom in close enough, and you get the street name in both languages. Being able to actually choose which language would eliminate this.

I think my questions are valid. i don't live there anymore, why do you tolerate such a system when ambulances are relying on Doreen having paid her data bill.

I don't know if you've noticed but there are clear differences between a piece of metal with street names on it and an online map.

For the third time, an online map could provide a user a choice between two languages.

Your comparison between street signs and Google maps are flawed too. They're two different things. I've never seen a physical map with street names in Irish and English.

Doreen will find you if her map is in the language she speaks.

Can you provide one practical advantage to having mixed language on the one map? What is the benefit? Why are you promoting this?

The one kid who left my class in Primary School in the Seventies to go to an Irish language school was a right little cnut who booted me in the nads for having a London accent after Bloody Sunday. Not a scientific quota but enough to persuade me that Irish speakers were either/both bigoted 'ra heads or Mena Bean Ui Cribhin until proven otherwise.
